🚇 Hyde Park Corner 🍺 £6.70 Moretti ❤️ A charming London boozer with a story to tell. . On a secluded cobbled street in the heart of Belgravia, you will find The Grenadier pub. The nearest Tube is Knightsbridge which is a five minute walk away. Make sure you walk down atmospheric Old Barrack Yard to get here. . This pub was originally built in 1720 as the officers mess for the senior infantry regiment of the British army, the 1st regiment of foot guards, and located in a courtyard of their barracks. It was opened to the public in 1818 as The Guardsman. . Legend has it that The Grenadier is named after young Cedric, a soldier who was caught cheating at cards and punished by being beaten to death. Visitors hang money from the ceiling in an attempt to pay his debt, but Cedric seems to remain trapped on earth. . The facade of this pub has to be one of the most recognisable in London. This Georgian building with its white walls, blue panels and red door and sentry box, make this pub a desirable one to visit. . Inside the decor is traditional, around the walls are paintings and prints celebrating the history of The Grenadier Guards. At the centre of this pub is an island servery which has beautiful oak panels and lots of brass fixtures and fittings. At the back of the bar are cosy snugs which are predominantly used for dining. Don’t forget to look up at the ceiling to see the multitude of bank notes to pay Cedric’s debt. . The beer choice was good and included four real ales. I decided on a Moretti, my pint was decent and price point was above average. There is plenty of pub grub on offer, Fish & Chips costs £16.50. . I arrived mid afternoon on a Friday and the pub was busy. The atmosphere was relaxed and the ambiance convivial. The crowd was a mix of local workers having an extended lunch break and a fair few tourists from across the pond. The service was good, the staff were attentive and very welcoming. . The Grenadier is full of character and history which makes for an engaging pub experience. I would suggest a mid-week visit and make sure you take some cash for Cedric. . ℹ️ Info correct on...
Read moreI went to this pub yesterday with my cousin's for the first time after it was recommended to us by our fellow cousin, Lauren, who couldn't make it to the meal we all had together and I'd definitely recommend coming to the pub if you're looking for somewhere to eat that's a bit off the beaten track.
The staff in the pub were really helpful as I'd never been there before and the service was great on the whole, as even though it felt like it was a while before we got served our food it didn't seem that long because of all the talking we were doing.
The food was really nice that I had, as I had a burger and chips that were really filling, even though I felt like I had room for dessert afterwards.
The interiors of the pub were really interesting too, as I loved seeing the various bank notes on the ceiling, so much so that myself and the rest of my cousin's signed a Japanese bank note that one of my cousin's Nicole had that we stuck on the wall afterwards dated Sunday the 13th of August 2023.
I don't think I've ever been to a pub before with bank notes on the wall, which is what makes this pub even more unique than your more normal pubs like Wetherspoons for example.
Not that there's anything wrong with Wetherspoons for those reading that like Wetherspoons and are regular visitors.
I'd definitely recommend this pub if you're looking for somewhere to eat that's a bit hidden away that has really unique...
Read moreThank you for a delicious lunch, if a little expensive… On arrival, I was told flatly that my booking could not be found. Strange, since I’d made it in person, earlier in the week, but the charming young woman behind the bar confirmed our table to the waiter who had told us it didn’t exist.
The food was superb, we had the Scallops to start, and Beef Wellington to follow.
The next odd thing was that after the main course we weren’t invited to see the menu for dessert.
Instead, we were informed, slightly irritably, that we would have to surrender our table in 15 minutes.
We accepted this with smiles and no dispute.
When we left I asked a member of Staff if they actually served Desserts, and got a rather sorry/not sorry response when I explained that we hadn’t been offered the option.
A little strange. We paid the Service charge however undeserved it was.
Perhaps we irritated the Staff in some way, but I cannot see how. Two 60-something friends and colleagues meeting up for a quiet lunch and a chat.
Perhaps we didn’t spend enough (three glasses of wine and a bottle of sparkling water), we didn’t behave badly, we weren’t raucous or drunk, in fact we were more polite to the Staff than they were to us.
The whole experience left a lingering bad taste, no matter how excellent the food.
There won’t be a second visit, from me, or any...
