The Rugged Bunch — Restaurant in London

“The best coffee & people in London,” reads the caption on a Polaroid taped to the wall near my table at this small coffee shop midway between Angel and Old Street. As a mere infrequent visitor to London, I am hardly qualified to make judgements about the best anything in this city, and yet the outstanding coffee and food at The Rugged Bunch leaves me feeling totally unable to disagree with the caption’s effusive praise.

This morning I enjoyed a latte with balanced, nutty flavors, the right temperature, and good milk quality. I eat a lot in the morning so I usually order two menu items at this type of place. The granola pot impressed me with carefully selected ingredients of obviously high quality, and the avocado toast had plenty of perfectly ripe avocado, ample seasoning, and good bread. Avocado toast is surprisingly easy to mess up, but The Rugged Bunch approaches the dish with the seriousness millennials expect.

The shop enjoys the custom of a steady stream of local, regular customers, creating a pleasant morning pre-workday atmosphere. The location is far enough away from any central tourist area to discourage a high volume of internet-driven traffic. In short, the perfect place. I...

Went to Rugged Bunch after hearing great things about their toasted sandwiches – and I do love a good toastie (who doesn’t?).

The café has a great vibe, friendly staff, and a nice community feel – you can tell it’s a local favourite.

I ordered the toastie, and while it was clearly generous and made with care, it wasn’t quite to my taste. The combination of two cheeses made it a bit greasy and heavy for me though that could just be personal preference, as I tend to like mine lighter on the cheese.

That said, I’m not here to give them a bad wrap just sharing my experience. The toastie is huge, and if you’re into rich, cheesy ones, you’ll probably love it.

Went in with my mum for a quick coffee and Nata. She’s not been able to enjoy her usual strong coffee and staff were extremely kind and did their best to make sure it was to her liking. Unfortunately, despite them amending it the coffee was still too strong for her. I just asked for some extra milk but they immediately took it back and insisted on remaking it despite it nearing closing time. She loved it and enjoyed her coffee for the first time in a long time which meant a lot to me. Honestly, the best customer service.
