I had found this place previously, whilst browsing Google maps. I marked it as a place I'd like to visit as the achetecture and decor of the pub reminded me of the type of classic London boozer, I used to visit years ago. Sadly, most of these hidden corner community pubs have either been converted into apartments or have been gentrified beyond belief. Not this one however. I was lucky enough to start a new job, providing services to care homes, very recently. To my surprise, I found myself visiting a care home a stones throw away from this pub. Of course, I had to pay a wee visit to satisfy my curiosity. The pub looks exactly as it does in the pictures. Climbing greenery adorns the outer victorian brickwork and bottle green tiling. This really is a picture postcard example of an old fashioned Victorian London pub. Photographers take note. As you walk inside you are immediately taken back in time, to when pubs had beautifully crafted all encompassing oak bars and dark wooden cladding. Pat, the owner of this wonderful establishment, peered up from behind the bar and greeted me with a smile. They had quite a selection of beers and real ales. I politely asked for a pint of Sussex Gold to which he poured like a pro. Pat asked if I wanted any food but I informed him that I was short on time. We got chatting for a bit. I learned that Pat had been here for 35 years. Ten of those from the time when he was the resident DJ here. Pat knows his clientele. From what I saw, he certainly knows how to treat his customers. It was a delight to sit there, supping my pint and listening to Pat, whilst surrounded by the most delightful and arguably artistic interior in any London pub I've ever visited. This place is pub heaven. Do yourself a favour, if you ever visit this area. Pop into The Vic for a lesson on how pubs were and should...
Read moreJust came in on the red eye and was looking for a great plate of food with a laid back vibe and friendly people. I was a mere 15 minute walk from The Victoria but after countless hours of travel I was wondering if I should settle for something closer - I decided NO. The Victoria is all that is right and good and what I needed to turn myself around.
Walked in to a quiet and friendly pub and asked if we could have lunch (it was a little late) and was told of course! Pat advised on what they were cooking today courtesy of Trisha and it was a steak pie - put us in for two! We were asked how hungry we were and candidly...we were starving. Enjoyed a lovely cider and struck up conversation with Alan while the food was prepared. The plate of food when it arrived was quite possibly the most beautiful thing I have ever seen - and it tasted even better. The steak was so tender, the gravy so rich, the chips that I know are handmade were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
Had another round before we walked home for a much needed shower and nap, however the walk home seemed ever so much easier and pleasant after a fantastic meal with friendly people. We are in this part of London for a couple of more days and I cannot wait to go back. Thanks...
Read moreWas delivering some building materials to a site opposite pub(HGV) Was in desperate need to use toilet and went into pub and asked a gentlemen sitting in the bar peeling spuds if I could use his toilet. Of course he said your very welcome and I thanked him. When I came out of the toilet the pubs interior and atmosphere was outstanding,I conveyed this to the gentleman who had allowed me to use the toilet who I now know as Pat. We had a long conversation about many many things especially the pub itself. I left knowing that yes there still are pubs left that have the old atmosphere that is slowly dissipating with pubs closing down to be turnt into flats or modernised. This is a real gem with a community atmosphere where Pat has been landlord for over 40 years. We need to preserve places like this. Thankyou Pat once again for your genuine hospitality and hopefully I will return and have a good drink...
