This place is definitely a must visit if you like to dine and and are in the Manchester area. It’s carries a great atmosphere and is group friend with up 12 ppl around 1 grill. The chefs that prepare and cook your meals are very humorous with silly but sweet jokes played on the guests to lighten the mood. The food was delicious and very satisfying my only reservation about the food is seeing how much salt is used in each dish with rivers of salt pouring into each dish. It would be nice to have a reduced offer of salt but as it is cooked fresh in front of you you can easily advise your chef to go easy with the white stuff. The waiters are a little dreay with no real warm hospitality almost silent in he customer service. When we arrived we had a waited who almost seem to be irritated and didn’t even great us nor thank us for dining with Sapporo but don’t let one staffs attitude deture you from This place.

I work for a Japanese company so the concept of Teppenyaki is not unfamiliar to me. When a friend suggested i try the Manchester Sapporo restaurant I was quite keen to see how it met up to my standards. The restaurant itself is huge and you sit on a U shaped bench / table with lots of other people. It’s quite intimate and you’ll certainly get to know your neighbours! The Teppanyaki chefs arrive and put on a “show” for you. Lots of fast chopping, flipping, oohs and aahs. I won’t ruin one of the parts of the show but it’s fun if you’ve not seen it before. The food itself was ok. We had a selection of meat and rice, noodles, potatoes and veg. Portion size was OK but not massive. My only gripe was that the beer was terrible. Both draught lagers were flat and tasted weird. Really ruined a good meal. Great for a family but not sure I’d return with just an adult party.

I rarely write bad or average reviews, but I was left rather disappointed after a Sunday lunch at Sapporo. I ordered sushi and miso soup. While the soup was good, the sushi was sadly lacking - it had quite a strong fishy taste and the nigiri in particularly was not made properly, with the fish being too long for the rice (picture attached). I have eaten sushi at different price points across the UK and Asia and this experience felt comparable to supermarket sushi in quality. I understand that Sapporo is known for Teppanyaki rather than sushi, but they should consider adopting Yuzu’s approach, which is to avoid adding sushi to the menu because their chefs are not trained in sushi making. The other major issue was the service. I would have raised the problem with the sushi to our server as I believe restaurants should have the chance to improve, but she was rarely present or available despite only two other tables being occupied. No water was offered or brought nor did she check in on whether we enjoyed the food, even when bringing us new dishes. We kept waiting for her to appear to order more drinks and dessert, but even when she was nearby she would just walk past our table despite us having empty glasses and plates - we had to actively work to get her attention. We were unable to spot her to flag her down and had to resort to asking other waitstaff for our bill. It did seem that other waitstaff were more well-trained as the other two occupied tables did not seem to have the same issues with finding their waiter, but I can only speak to our experience. At this price point, you expect at least semi-interested staff but sadly this was not the case. We actually considered asking for the service charge to be removed - which we have never done before - but ultimately decided we did not want the other wait staff to be impacted. I will say that my partner really enjoyed the Teppanyaki - the chef was skilled and pulled off some difficult tricks, and the steak was cooked exactly as requested. Hence the three stars. I was really looking forward to the food given the good reviews, but there were glaring issues that meant I won’t be returning.

Having been to many Teppanyaki experiences around the world I was excited to try on on a recent trip to Manchester and introduce my daughter to it. Underwhelming and oberpriced is the best way to describe it. The staff were friendly and nice but rushed and stressed and it seemed to be all about table turnover. Starters were served right away once ordered before others at the table got theirs. The teppanyaki chefs did not seem to be Japanese and our chef had minimal interaction with the table. He was very nice, but there was no banter and no excitement to the show. He came in cooker, did the obligatory potato throwing and egg cracking but with zero finesse or personality. So disappointing. Other places I've been you'd end up getting to know the whole table based on the chef's interactions. The food was fine. Nothing special and not worth the price. As an avid cook myself I was anxious when I came in and the smell of seafood was quite prominent. This is usually a sign of not very fresh seafood. Upon tasting the lobster this was confirmed. I was also concerned with the time taken to cook the fish. The seabass was on the grill for way too long. Thankfully I didn't have any, but it was clear that all the seafood was overcooked including my lobster, but the seabass and salmon looked dreadful. The garlic thrown on top was quickly burnt and made for a bitter experience. My daughter's chicken was also overcooked. The steak was fine. I asked for rare knowing I'd be lucky to get medium rare and I did thankfully get that. The fried rice was quite tasty. Once it was over the chef just disappeared and was on to another table. Felt a bit rushed to finish up and get out. Really disappointing experience for me, had hoped to have the usual experience of delicious food with an entertaining show. Certainly not worth the money at all. 🙁

The food was below average, service mediocre, semi entertaining theatrics. I drop my family off at the restaurant, go to park the car, come in nobody looks at me, I am invisible, I have to find the table on my own. The waitress gives us the set menus but not the a la carte, we have to wait till we catch somebody else to ask for those. These are delivered to the males at the table first then to the women! Ordered tea, apologies we can not provide you with tea now you will have to wait as we do not have enough tea pots! Ah now we have one tea pot you can have it, but your son will have to wait. I will have the Monk Fish, oops we ran out of monk fish, ok I will have the ribeye stake. Let me check, yes we have that. 20 minutes later sorry the last steak we had was just served to somebody else. Why do not you have this dish instead! Daughter ordered Okonomiyaki, arrives has no resemblance to the real thing, and does not tase good. Goes back nearly intact no comment from the servers. Served fish, prawns and scallops all test the same and taste of slightly burned garlic, good ingredients wasted by poor cooking. The egg fried rice is not edible, any take away in the land would produce better quality. The Sushi and the tempura were OK, however the tempura entree dish arrived half way through the main dish! The bill was astronomical, which I was expecting having seen the prices, But the shoddy quality of the service and the food makes this place a definite no repeat.

Kids wanted ramen for lunch, so I decided to treat them to Sapporo. We've been lots of times before and it's always been great but sadly not today... the food looked good but the flavours did not make sense. We always go for the ramen so we know what it should be like. The spicy beef ramen was not spicy and the broth was bland and oily. The chicken Tom yum was so spicy you could not taste anything else but heat, yes I am aware its a spicy dish and I love heat but this was bland and incredibly hot. We sent it back it was inedible. We tried the ribs it was awful, super stringy and full of sinew again bland, it's like they ran out of salt and only had 5 spice so they went with it. The bento box was ok, kinda like what my 12 year old would cook and we'd praise her to increase her confidence, edible nice but not great. The katsu curry is the only thing we ordered that remained consistent no complaints on this dish. The service was incredibly lonely, the restaurant was practically empty and yet we still had to walk around to find our server to order and ask for soy sauce (did not come with the bento box) she checked on us once at the beginning of our meal, didnt refill our drinks because i really couldn't be bothered to get up and look for her again. Overall, we won't be back and I won't be recommending sapporo anymore it was a waste of money standards have dropped, in my opinion.
