Bar + Block Steakhouse Nottingham — Restaurant in Nottingham

Extremely disappointed with the food and service considering the price point. Would’ve had better food and service at a Wetherspoons.

On entering the restaurant we waited in the entrance as staff members walked past us multiple times, glancing our way but never actually acknowledging us. Another couple waiting also commented and expressed their frustration with this.

When we were finally seated by a man with glasses who I assume was the Manager, he began to welcome us before being obviously distracted by a large table of men and another member of staff. He began muttering about the staff member as me and my friend sat there before darting off without even an “excuse me” and we were left to look at the menu. We agreed it was quite rude to not excuse himself.

He then returned where he left off and we ordered our food. My friend ordered the spiral steak and I ordered some beef nachos (at £8.50) and some squid.

The beef nachos were one of the most memorably bad dishes I’ve eaten. I usually order the same dish at Las Iguanas at the same price, so was very disappointed when the plate turned up with cheap nacho cheese, and about 10 small fried bits of beef. I wish I’d taken a picture but the beef looked like fried baby mice dropped on the plate. I tried some and my god, I don’t know how anyone could’ve made beef so BLAND! Has this place heard of seasoning?

The salt and pepper squid, sweet potato fries and the spiral steak were nice, however the sauce for the steak was literally just pure oil.

We were also served by an American waitress who was very lovely and patient even when I said I wasn’t happy with my dish.

Overall the two stars are because of the service from the young American waitress, otherwise it would’ve been 1 or 0!

We booked for our annual “lads’ Xmas meal”, while the food was good, the following elements were missing for me:

1. The beer choice available was very poor. I like bitter, but all our waiter had to offer was lager, lager, lager, IPA, cider, Guinness. Why not have a decent bitter type drink instead of one of the lagers?
2. I ordered the Asian crispy shredded beef for a starter. What arrived was a bowl of just that; a few strands of vegetation added.. I gave up half way through, nice as it was I would expect something to eat with it like salad, more veg, noodles?
3. My main was steak and chips. That’s all the dish is made up of; again, I’d expect some added vegetable for a £30 meal; maybe peas, or mushrooms? If these were available, they weren’t offered by our waiter. It was a very nice steak!
4. 2 of my friends had a jacket potato instead of chips. Both had to call the waiter over to ask for butter, and he brought just one little packet for each. This wasn’t enough; jacket spuds need butter! One friend left half of his potato as it was butter-less and the waiter didn’t come back again.
5. my dessert was banoffee cheesecake, there was a bit of banana and a drizzle of caramel, but it really just tasted of standard cheesecake; I expected more!
6. Finally we were told a few days before our meal that a major food supplier had closed down and a restricted menu would be available. It was a decent menu but did lack a bit of Xmas spirit. I’d have thought a little discount for diners who didn’t cancel and go elsewhere might have been nice. We did ask, but...

My recent visit to Bar + Block Steakhouse left me with mixed feelings. The venue itself was impeccable—clean, well-presented, and exuding a welcoming ambiance. The staff were exceptionally friendly and accommodating, which set a positive tone for our dining experience.

I ordered the "Ultimate Roast," which was a mixed bag. The vegetables were fresh and well-prepared, and the dish was presented beautifully. However, the chicken skin was unfortunately burnt, likely due to overly high flames in the rotisserie. Despite this, the chicken meat was flavorful and juicy. The lamb and beef portions were disappointingly small, leaving me wanting more of these otherwise delicious meats.

My partner opted for the fillet steak, which arrived as more of a joint than a traditional steak. Cooked to a perfect medium-rare as requested, the exterior was firmer than expected. This detracted from the typical melt-in-the-mouth experience that one would expect from a fillet.

We had set our expectations high, naively anticipating a 4-star dining experience. While the decor, food presentation, and service lived up to this standard, the quality of the food did not quite meet our expectations on this occasion. The prices were reflective of a higher-end restaurant, which made the inconsistencies in food quality more noticeable.

Overall, Bar + Block Steakhouse shows great potential, but there is room for improvement in the execution of their dishes to fully meet the high standards they aspire to. I hope to see these refinements on a...
