I've been visiting the New Oxford with my best friend Paul for nearly a couple of decades - once or twice a year, or once every few years, sometimes more. Manchester (including the separate borough of Salford) has great pubs, traditional to modern, cheap to very expensive and cheap and cheerful to extremely trendy. The New Oxford has gone from a locals and newcomers pub with friendly staff, quite cheap traditional British beer (ale or bitter), real ale and good cheap Czech lager, to expensive locally brewed modern craft ales, excessively hoppy, strong or flavoured, and a huge variety of expensive fine lagers (other alcoholic and alcohol free drinks available). They could sell me one traditional Northern bitter (albeit by a micro brewery) and San Miguel lager suitable for a sunny June night. If you're in Manchester or Salford, I couldn't recommend stopping in for a pint enough - well worth a visit! Keep up the...
Read moreStopped by on a windy afternoon (Feb 5). Truly amazing and impressive selection of beers. The barman, a Kerry lad (hence the Ireland scarf above the bar, I reckon) is a real enthusiast. He praised and described all the IPAs on offer and his recommendation (a fine Stockport IPA) was spot-on! Within minutes he prepared a tuna sandwich for me and eggs & chips for my friend. Great pub. And taking a look around the area (new flats; refurbished houses) was rewarding. Inspired me to write a few lines in my latest story: CURSED KERSAL, soon available from amazon/kindle. With places like The New Oxford and staff like yer man from Kerry - prose...
