Fern Cottage was a favourite of my partner and myself and this was our first visit under the new owners.
We were dubious that a couple of our favourites were no longer on the menu but trusted that the new owners would pull out the stops.
To start we had the goats cheese and the haggis, neeps & tatties. Both dishes were portioned perfectly, hot and fresh. A nice little introduction to the meal.
For our mains we opted for the venison and the duck. Two quite different dishes.
The venison was delicious and clearly cooked with attention. Hearty and rather homely.
The duck - I don't eat duck and I've never been a fan, so went for that. I'm so glad I did! This was probably the nicest, most flavoursome dish I've eaten in a long time. The subtle chilli kick with the sweetness from apricot was so mouth watering and moreish. A new favourite!
Dessert was as enjoyable as everything before. The sticky toffee pudding was rich and deep, paired perfectly with smooth vanilla ice cream. The cheesecake of the day was white chocolate and hazelnut - I was sold before even trying it. Just beautiful.
To top the whole experience off, the service was spectacular. Although it was really busy we were met with nothing but smiles and happiness from all the staff we encountered. We were left alone but checked on comfortably regularly.
The owners made a point of checking in too and were lovely.
The atmosphere was livelier than we remembered and this came as a nice surprise making it feel more welcoming and allowing us to freely converse without the feeling that the rest of the diners could listen in.
Overall, our experience was simply spectacular. We'll be back on the regular and can't wait to swing by for lunch! We wish the new owners every success in their...
Read moreCute little restaurant, friendly staff and attentive service, but the food was only 50/50. I had the fern cottage burger,. The beef patty and the onion ring on top were good but all I could taste of the burger was the BBQ sauce. Too heavy on the sauce, and the cheese was more of a cheese sauce than a nice slice of sharp Cheddar or equivalent and it oozed out heabilt when i squeezed the burger to get a bite in. The fries were really good though, but the meal itself was not worth €19 ($40CAN). I had a burger at the Isle of Glencoe Hotel that was worth it tho (€22), amazing burger and so worth it, nice and light, no heavy sauces, fresh veg, so it's possible. For an appie I had hummus, should be a no brainer but all I could taste was olives - no garlic or tahini or chickpea, just olive (which i can't stand). I've tried dozens of different hummus's in my 50yrs, never had one where the only flavor was olive. If u love olives, have no fear and order it but if u r looking for hummus, give it a pass. My boyfriend had the prawn appie and prime rib w peppercorn sauce for the main. Both delicious, although it's weird in scotland to have a nice steak coming w fries vs a nice mashed potato side. The steak was €34, or about $68CAN, it was cooked perfectly, nice and tender with a delicious peppercorn sauce, but I've had a better sirloin at the keg for $28can. The bottle of malbec we had was really good and worth the price for a bottle at a restaurant, no problem paying for a nice wine. We walked down the road and checked out The Bridge Restaurant menu and wished we had eaten there instead. Skip The Fern and...
Read moreThis is a very great place to go. Wonderful ambient, amazing food and very friendly and helpful staff. The place is tidy and clean. There is a great choice of food on the menu. We had the lunch menu I have been there with 2 other people. We had the pan fried salmon, the fish and chips and a beef cheese burger. All dishes were absolutely amazing. Fish and chips: chips are home made, not as crispy as I would have wished for but great flavour and quality of potato. The batter on the fish was wonderfully thin and super crispy and flavoursome, the fish was thich and cooked to perfection. The pan fried salmon: the salmon was cooked to perfection, the vegetables were wonderful and also cooked to perfection and the buttered baby potatoes were very flavourful. The beef cheese burger was the perfect size and fresh made beef. The chips same as I mentioned at the Fish and Chips. It was absolutely great. We already booked a table for tomorrow to try out the dinner menu. Give it a shot guys and let me know what you think of this place. A heads up: WE WERE LUCKY TO GET A TABLE AS WALK IN FOR LUNCH BUT FOR DINNER (WHICH STARTS AT 5PM) MAKE SURE TO PREBOOK A TABLE!!!
So had dinner there now too with 2 others and it was absolutely amazing and this time we even managed taking pictures well, at least from the Main meal we weren't fast enough to take photos of the dessert :-) HUGE COMPLIMENTS TO THE WHOLE TEAM! we had the lamb, the fish and chips again and the duck. As dessert we had cheese plate and a raspberry cheese cake....
