We love fish n chips and try to find the best at home in America. During our recent cruise in the British Isles, we thought thought we thought we would try to find some to outdo our favorites. On our stop on Glasgow, my husband did an online search for the best in town. After a lengthy walk, we located the mentioned Merchant Chippie's. The shop is small, but clean. It was busy, but the line moved quickly. There are a few small tables inside, but a nice place outside to sit as well, and the weather was gorgeous. The cashier was very friendly and allowed us to carry extra chairs outside where it was cool so we could sit, since the other chairs were in use. The fish n chips were cooked to order, but were ready quickly. They were perfect...no complaints. They are absolutely the best I have ever eaten anywhere! The fish tasted fresh. It was flaky and tender with a perfect crispy coating. We ate ours with tarter sauce on the side, but it didn't even need it. The chips were perfectly salted and served with malt vinegar. This place makes me want to go back to Scotland for another visit! I miss it already.

I was looking for the best fish and chips place in Glasgow, well it definitely seemed an authentic local joint. 📍Place: located at the edge of the downtown, but easily accessible by walk. It is very small, only max 10 seats inside and your back is against your neighbours back. Also you will definitely get oil smelly so takeaway is strongly recommended. 🍛 Food: I had the supper (haddock + chips for £9.90), to me it was a little too oily, and the fries were not as crispy as I expected. I paid additional £2.40 for mushy peas, which didn't have too much taste either, so I generously poured some vinegar and salt on that. The portion is huge so you definitely not gonna stay hungry. Overall I am not saying it's bad, but I had some better in London or even in Edinburgh. 👩🏻‍🍳 Service: they were nice, served quickly and freshly, they claim every fish is caught daily around Aberdeen, and that I can believe.

I must say this is one of the best fish & chips shop here in GLA. They served it piping hot direct from the kitchen . The haddock were fresh & what I liked most is the fish batter ; it is light & crispy & not oily. Their homemade chips are delicious & nice to eat with the vinegar. Food 9/10 Service 8/10 Ambience 8/10 Value for money 7/10 ( it is quiet a standard price around here ; 7-8 pounds per serving) It is a small shop so bear in mind to avoid busy hours in order to get a seat. Nearby the varsity & student accommodations . The shop should give some student discount . Overall will definitely eat there again.

Thanks guys for the bulky filling 'Spicy Haggis Supper' which I would never normally have and to be honest...I just had to bin after a bite and a chip or two...it was awful 😕

I was hungry and though the service was pleasant enough this chipshop was near empty which is always a bad sign so I might have made better choices...

I'm a 'Fish Supper' man like many Scots chipshop goers ((haddock)) which I think is the measure of any good fish & chip shop in Scotland but this shop "Merchants"?..ah well..

I'm trying to be kind as I describe they're very enemic looking precooked/pre-battered yucky battered fish fillet (species unknown)

It looked so unappetising, unpalatable, insipid and we'll... cheeze...just so downright indigestable.

Why would anybody want to buy that from you FFS?

As a Glasgow City Centre Chipshop on busy Buchanan Street, I assume you "get by" and so maybe my comments won't bother you so much, but I really care about what is presented as a 'Fish Supper' in Scotland whether it's to the indigenous or the tourist.

If you were able to be unnoffended and spurred on by truly well meaning and business boosting constructive criticism... I would suggest that you make changes to bring truly good fish supper experiences to Buchanan Street...a much needed change.

For example

There are great Fish Supper Experiences all over Scotland and I have travelled extensively to sample some of the best... including so many in Glasgow.

Some in Fife where I come from which used to be so highly rated are now...no si much..

Aberdeen can offer you an 'Ashvale Whale Supper' which is an experience not to be missed by Fish Supper fans...I luv em but discovery is for the conosuier lol

Best quality measure to date is still

'The Fish And Chip Company' in Perth.

This chipshop will always be hard to beat. Their freshly battered thick cooked new pearly white fillet is a dream of a Fish Supper as is their beautiful chips.

Hungry people will pay premium prices for City Centre Chippies but fir christsakes min try a...

Visiting the UK and not having Fish and Chips at least once while you're there is like ordering a hot fudge sundae without topping it with a cherry. It would still be good, but it would be incomplete.

This establishment is in the heart of the Merchant City neighborhood of Glasgow at the corner of High St. and Ingram St. They offer some great options. Fish and Chips and other seafood delights are the staple offerings but there are also local favorites like Haggis, Scotch Pie, Sausage and Black Pudding. Add to those some more adventurous things like Fried Pizza as well as BBQ Ribs and Burgers, and there is something for most everyone. There is even a Halloumi Burger for non-carnivores. On the more unusual heart-attacky side, for dessert there is a Fried Mars Bar. A Strawberry Tart dessert is offered for those who want a more normal life expectancy.

We visited this place on a Sunday night around 8 PM. It was an easy walk from our hotel. They were still doing a brisk business even an hour before closing. The atmosphere is cozy with three or four inside tables and an approximately equal number of little outdoor patio tables for those who prefer to be outside. The format is walk-up-and-order. The staff are quite efficient and pleasant enough to deal with. The food comes out quickly.

We tried the 1-pc. Fish and Chips Haddock Supper along with the 1-pc. Cod. There were enough chips that we could split them. It's fair to say that we thoroughly enjoyed these classics. The rest of the good news is that the price tag for these was £23 all in. At £11.50 per person, this is a very good value for a simple, filling, classic meal. We would try this place again if we make...

🐟 - It was time for Tea and seeing as it's Friday and "Fish and Chips Day" there was only one thing......To hunt down the BEST Chippie in Glasgow 🙂.

After comparing Two Leading Chippies with one having multiple branches in the city.....I settled on Merchant Chippie in the Merchant Quarter.

This Chippie is Award Winning as being one of 50 of the Best UK Chip Shops! As well as a Winner of Scotland's Best Fish and Chips 🙂..... There was even a Motion in the Scottish Parliament Stating the above as well as being the Only one in Glasgow!

I had to have a Traditional Cod Supper with Tea..... It was Absolutely Delicious 😋 One of the BEST Fish and Chips I've ever Had! No Grease or Foul Cheap Taste just Everything Cooked the 'Traditional Crispy Batter Way with Homemade Chips . It reminded me of Yorkshire Fish and Chips..... It was absolutely divine and worthy of the awards 😋😋😋😋.

Being in Scotland I just had to have a Friend Mars Bar for Dessert. Deep Frying a Mars Bar originated in Scotland in 1995 as a Dare..... It turned out so well it has become the Unofficial National Dish of Scotland! I just had to have it at the Best Chippie in Glasgow........ It was Sweet Gooey Divine 😋..... Why have I not had this before now! I must now have it if English Chippies offer it!

Anyway judging by the amount of Custom and Delivery Riders Picking up Order's I made the right decision, and the Chippie Girls were so warming and hospitable.... You need to come to this place when in Glasgow 🙂..... Oh and the fish come daily from Astrather and Aberdeen and they sell Fresh Fish tooo if I haven't sold you...
