We recently visited this restaurant for the first time. Our experience was positive from the minute we walked in the door. The ambiance was warm & friendly and it was beautifully decorated with twinkly lights & Christmassy. The staff were friendly, attentive & seated us immediately in a cosy comfortable booth. Our server was Joseph who was very chatty & friendly. He was very informative about both the A la carte menu & Sunday roast menu, talking us through all our options and choices. 3 of us chose the Sunday roast menu. 1 chose the ham & 2 the best of both. We chose ham and beef. All dishes were served with a great selection of potatoes, veg, Yorkshire puddings & gravy. My husband chose sirloin steak. He usually does, but said it's the best tasted & cooked he's had for a very long time and we eat out often. The wine & beers were also very lovely. None of us had dessert on this occasion as we were fully satisfied with our main meal. If I had to highlight 1 positive, it would be the Sunday roast potion size may be a bit too much for some people, however I see this as constructive critisism. We were satisfied with value for money for the overall experience. Joseph was very helpful and recommended other establishments we could visit for drinks & cocktails, and the other staff were equally attentive. I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough and I can't wait to go back and sample other dishes from the menu. You must try it for yourself!

We booked on Sunday afternoon for that evening and having arrived early there was no problem seating us right away. The staff were great, really friendly, chatty without being invasive and knew about the food and wine. The Malbec we wanted wasn't available but the other recommended option was delicious. We had goats cheese with pesto, pear and oatcakes to start. It was delicious but the pesto completely overpowered the pear which was a shame. For main we ordered a rib eye and a fillet with mash, spinach and roast potato sides. The steaks were delicious, full of flavour and well rested. While both were ordered rate, the fillet was heading towards medium, but no less tasty as a result. The mash was a delight and while the potatoes were tasty they were soft, almost like boiled potatoes tossed in oil. I had hoped they would be crispy. Next time I'll try the fries or chips instead. The only real disappointment was the spinach. It was listed a creamed spinach with nutmeg but it was very bland and watery. I had to ask for salt and pepper as there seemed to have been no seasoning added. We didn't have dessert as we were absolutely stuffed! They were happy to let us take the last of our wine to the outside tables to enjoy the last of the sun. Overall it was a great experience. The little issues were not enough to ruin our night and we will certainly be back.

I’m a visitor from NYC. I regularly have the luxury of partaking in fine dining in Manhattan. My meal this evening at The Merchant Steakhouse easily competes with some of the best steakhouses I’ve visited in New York. I was greeted warmly and promptly brought to my table although I didn’t have a reservation and was dining alone. A mocktail was crafted for me although it’s not on the regular menu. I began with the ash roasted beet root and shredded fennel salad. The subtle hints of fire roasting and the surprising match with toasted hazelnuts was a delight. For my main course I chose the 45 day aged ribeye, accompanied by the creamed spinach and salted skinny fries. Each was carefully prepared with a gentle but direct seasoning and the meat was top notch. The perfect ending to my meal was the warm date pudding. This is a dish I make at home regularly, so I’m a bit of a critic when I try it in a restaurant. This pudding is making me think about tweaking my own recipe. The service was impeccable! The servers balanced that fine line between being warm and friendly yet maintaining the appropriate professional distance. I never needed to look for assistance because each need was anticipated and met. This is a a special restaurant!

Didn't know how to go about this review but here goes,

I visited the Merchant steakhouse on Saturday the 15th march and where do I start. I will explain my next comments.

Over priced, underwhelmed and would not recommend.

So first off we had a reservation at 8pm. We where seated quickly and servers where very welcoming, BUT we were rushed. Within 15 minutes we got told that if we didn't order now we would have to wait as there was a table of 20 and if we didn't order it would be a while before we got to order, as we where celebrating my partner's birthday we felt this was not great service. So we ordered. Tomahawk steak which came with two sides and two sauces and we ordered two extra sides, my sister in law wanted a burger but they ran out in a steakhouse, but that was the case, she then ordered the chicken supreme. We where told that it would take around 40 minutes for the steak yet it came within 15 minutes, steak and sides no chicken though, we where then told of an issue with the ordering system which was fine they apologised and sorted ravioli for my sister in law and also to the credit of the staff did not charge us for the ravioli. We felt very rushed like they want the table or they where ready to close kind of vibes.

Cost: tomahawk steak was £150 on its own, so tomahawk £150 two extra along with the two sauces and sides that it came with four drinks and one sparkling water meant the total bill was £240. Meaning the two extra sides, four drinks and a sparkling water came to £90.

Would I recommend: NO over priced small portions and cost was not worth it. Will not be going back. It was a very expensive underwhelming experience rushed throughout and got home feeling hungry.

The hype is not worth it very bad experience, and the worst part of my partner's birthday.

Hope this helps you all decide (Nonna said) is way better less expensive and always leave feeling full and satisfied.

Shame on you...

We arrived and a lovely man greeted us and explained our table was a few minutes late but he was so nice and chatty while we waited. The waiter that took our order was nice and polite. The food came and it was fantastic. My friend ask where the bread and bone marrow butter was that has been ordered and again the waiter was very nice and apologetic. A minute or so passed and another man came to the table we feel maybe he was the wait staff manager. He abruptly asked who took our order and when we said the waiter he snapped and asked for a name I explained we didn't remember his name and he said because it shouldn't of been able to be ordered. We said its not a problem and but he insisted on getting us bread with a butter so we accepted. This man then asked what else we are waiting on and we said a gin he came back with a different cocktail. Then my husband ordered a beer he brought two. We ordered dessert and he stood waiting for one of our guests to hand him the menu back and seemed very offened when they didnt notice because they were engrossed in conversation. The wrong dessert was then brought for my husband. All of these ordered were being taken by the same man. It put a little dampener on the meal as we kept having to correct the orders and then he seemed not very happy and our meal was interrupted a good few times by this. It was a shame because the food was fantastic and we were happy to pay the price for such wonderful food but we felt the amount spent had almost been a slight waste because we weren't able to fully enjoy the experience because of the interruptions due to this one person and the disgruntled impression he was giving as if we were the ones messing about and just ordered the wrong things to...
