Update: The manager apparently cannot take criticism, which in this industry is sad. First of all, replying in such a manner to a review is hilarious. I am not complaining, neither I am asking for a refund. I am expressing my opinion, and describing my experience. If I went to Japan, I will surely get a better service, Japanese people are committed to delivering the best possible service to their customers. We didn't get any help from your Japanese staff, she just delivered our food. As to why we finished our food - as I have written in the review below the food didn't taste bad, it was after we left that we didn't feel good. I find it ridiculous that you have an order policy, which policy is not stated anywhere by the way. I find it redundant to quote the Consumers Rights Act to you, but I will friendly remind you that by no means you can determine how much food I can consume, hence I would order. Ordering more than what I can eat would mean wasting, which is disrespectful to the cook and to food in general. Also, we did not order any drinks, we don't drink. Finally, accusing us of "creating drama" over a £35 bill is hilarious, feel free to read my other reviews for restaurants better than yours. Good luck with staying in business with this attitude.
I really wish this could be a nice review, as I went to Oshibori with positive expectations. Alas, it was not a positive experience, and I still feel awful after a whole night spent in agony with food poisoning. My partner and I were advised to reserve a table so we did. Yet, when we got there we were welcomed with confusion and seated on a table for four right in the middle of the restaurant. We couldn't help but notice that there was a lovely table for two in the quiet area of the restaurant, which unfortunately was not cleaned after the previous guests. To be fair, even though our table was supposedly cleaned, some of the cutlery was missing and it looked sloppy. Nevertheless, we ignored that and proceeded with looking at the menus. The food menu was incredibly confusing, lacking any logic and poorly designed. We had to wait a bit for our order to be taken; at this point, after we had heard all about the promotion of our table neighbour, we asked to be moved to the more quiet area of the restaurant. Now, at the new table, we were full of hope that the food will turn our experience around and we will leave happy thanks to the food. Sadly, it took far too long for it to arrive, which left us time to notice the clutter behind the bar, the missing and unlit candles, all the dust and the peeling wallpapers. Once the starters were on the table we were hopeful again, the presentation was rather good. The chicken gyoza was delicious, and to be fair at this point I regretted not ordering two portions of it, instead of sushi. The California roll I ordered (you can only choose two ingredients for it, mayo being considered a filling equal to meat and avocado) was rolled loosely, the rice wasn't sticky enough, which made the pieces look sloppy; the flavour was rather bland. The bento box had a good presentation idea, yet the execution was once again sloppy. The flavours were not great either, the chicken for example did not even remind of Asia. Even though we were disappointed, we had no idea that the nightmare was about to commence. Soon after we got home, we both started feeling funny, well I won't get in details about the rest, but it definetely was food poisoning. I feel to weak today, but will definetely seek the manager's position tomorrow. Overall, if you want to have a nice Japanese food experience, Oshibori will most likely disappoint. If you want some different food Dundonian way and have a strong stomach, you may...
Read moreFirst time here after being recommended by family. Just a bizarre and very odd experience. We booked for 6pm and it was on a Sunday. We arrived with not a soul present at front of house to greet us and no customers either. I thought the place was closed or we had got something mixed up. After shouting “hello” in the stairwell we had someone shortly come and greet us. The place was cold and the decor was interesting; a japanese restaurant but it appeared to be set in a mish mash of decor era and themes. There is a deer/stag head on the wall, ornate ceilings, Greek columns, modern electric fire place, Baroque french and classic British style dinning room with interesting chandeliers around. I didn’t quite know what to expect. 2 different set of menus were given to us with different restraint names on the front, I think downstairs and upstairs have different menus and names…nevertheless it was a touch confusing in where we were suppose to order from or read both. We ordered the food and the waiting staff member didn’t know the menu well enough to comment on a couple of questions we had. The restaurant doesn’t offer any kids menu (Japanese kids menu I mean…did not want chicken nuggets or generic kids menu) and they don’t make kids portion meals of the same normal menu so a lot of food waste there when ordering for kids. 1 item of the order was forgotten to be added which we reminded and it did come. Food waste fresh and tasted okay. Just a personal note that none of the ramen had tea stained eggs or extras like kimchi which is common in most Japanese/oriental restaurants that serve this cuisine and meals. Deserts were not as good as mains or starters which is again very common in restaurants. The deserts were pre-made/not fresh and just average…something you can get from supermarket and make yourself with a bit of whipped cream or icecream added on top. The spoons for deserts came a good 5/6 mins later so we just sat and starred at our puddings which we waited. Bathrooms are genuinely a big let down for the place. They are unclean, damaged and poorly maintained. They should be a prompt focus for the establishment to bring up to spec, especially when they have such over the top grandeur dinning room…just seems very out of place. Anyway, bill was quiet a lot more than the quality of service, food and ambiance we experienced…honestly the chain restaurant wagamamas does it better. Anyway…we had an okay time, like I said mains and starters were fresh and tasted well. There is so much more this place can do to elevate the experience and it’s just...
Read moreI recently visited Oshibori Dundee to celebrate a friend's birthday, and I must say, our experience left us feeling quite disappointed. As first-time visitors, we were excited to try out this restaurant, given its glamorous appearance. However, our initial impressions quickly faded as we encountered several issues throughout the evening.
Upon arrival, we found that there was no host to greet us, so we approached the bartender to inquire about our reservation. Eventually, we were seated at our reserved table and handed menus. However, it took a staggering 20 minutes for a waiter to come and take our order, which immediately set the tone for the slow service to follow.
After 50 minutes, our alcoholic drinks finally arrived, but we were promised water that never materialized. We had to remind the waiter multiple times, and it took an additional 10 minutes before we received it. By this point, we had been waiting for an hour and had yet to see any sign of our food.
What frustrated us even more was that tables that arrived after us were served their meals before us. When we raised our concerns with the manager, we were informed that those tables had preordered their food. While it's understandable that preorders might take priority, it left us questioning why our status as paying customers was seemingly disregarded.
It took a total of 1 hour and 50 minutes before our food finally arrived, which was an incredibly long wait. While the quality of the food was good, the overall experience was tainted by the excessive waiting time.
To make matters worse, no compensation was offered for the poor service we endured. Considering the high prices charged at Oshibori Dundee, we expected much better treatment as paying customers. Regrettably, our evening was spoiled, and we left feeling let down.
Furthermore, I would like to add that our disappointment with Oshibori Dundee extended beyond the service and waiting time. We encountered additional inconveniences during our visit. The restroom facilities lacked basic amenities such as hot water and even toilet paper. It was quite surprising and frustrating to find such shortcomings in a supposedly upscale establishment. These issues further contributed to our overall negative experience at Oshibori Dundee.
Based on our experience, we have no plans to return to Oshibori Dundee in the future. The slow service, lack of communication, and overall disappointment overshadowed the positive aspects of the food...
