I visited with an American friend. She wanted to try genuine 'pub' food instead of the themed type which is prevalent in her part of the States.
We had cheese burgers and the 'ganga' fries. The fries are spicy, crispy and come with a lovely hot dip. Great for sharing. The burger was good and flavourful, good portions.
My friend ordered drinks and wasn't sure what to order. The bar tender was brilliant, and was quickly able to pinpoint what she may like and poured generous tasters for her to try. Friendly regulars too, who made her feel at ease in an unfamiliar environment.
Although on the level, accessibility for wheelchairs could be a problem, and the doorway could be a little tricky to navigate, especially when it's busy. I wouldn't recommend it for wheelchair users. This is mainly due to the age of the premises and the probable difficulty of upgrading the place to accommodate those with limited mobility.
Phoenix is a fantastic pub though! It was a regular haunt of mine when I went to college and art school in Dundee. There are lots of interesting paintings and drawings on the walls which tells of its link to the university and college.
I was pleased to experience that 'The Phoenix' still maintains excellent standards and the locals are as...
Read moreWas out with friends for drinks on December 28th, and we were having a fine night until one of the bar staff very bluntly and out of nowhere told us that we were not getting limes (we are not trouble makers or drunken louts and we were spending money in the bar) in our drinks despite there being fresh limes visble behind the bar, when we asked why, pointing out the limes the barman said he was too busy, a rather embarrassing and completely avoidable but semi heated discussion/argument ensued for a short while between one of my more stubborn friends and the now clearly annoyed (for an unknown reason) barman obviously now refusing out of his own stubbornness to back down until we finished our (lime free rum) drinks and left. What was a good night was soured by a barmans terrible attitude and it left a bitter taste (although not by lime). Despite really liking the phoenix otherwise I doubt we will be back anytime...
Read moreUsually a great pub in Dundee but the bar staff like the power. After knowing the usually saturday lunch/drink group were at Dundee hospitality, the bar man immediately waved to me to leave before any of the group entered the bar. I was the only member of the group that was not drinking and driving. After chatting with the bar man he said I had enough to drink but I wasn't drinking. The bar man was rude and was persistent that the group had too much to drink. He said the group were not going to cause trouble or looked to be any issue but we had enough to drink. He would still not serve me who was not drinking out of priniciple... appears to be a major power trip from the bar man. All other bar staff couldn’t even look and seemed to be embarrassed by the attitude of the bar man. We will never be back to the Phoenix after being treated like “kids” by a...
