Really lovely restaurant but disappointed by the tiramisu
Fair to say that I went with high expectations having heard great things and salivating over Instagram.
The venue was welcoming and spacious, the service warm and friendly and the menu (food and drink) were amazing. Menus where you could happily eat almost everything on them.
We had the misto frito, it was massive for 2. We enjoyed it very much. It includes courgette fries and baby squid; two of the world's great things :)
The main courses were very good. My wife reckons her fish stew might be the best she's had. There was a warming chilli heat, a tang of orange and a pastis punch. I really enjoyed my venison. Beautifully pink and tender with a sweet, sticky, savoury sauce and well roasted vegetables.
At this point we were in heaven, please keep this in mind as I witter on about pudding. This is a classy venue. You will have a lovely meal.
Now, I love tiramisu. I really love it. I will order it every time it's on the menu (and it's on a lot of menus.)
I maintain what I got wasn't a tiramisu. It looked like one. But it just tasted sweet. There was evidence of a dark liquid on the sponges but no discernable taste of coffee or booze. Just a slightly sickly sweetness.
When I told the waitress, stressing how much I enjoyed the rest of the meal, I was told that was how they made them, deliberately subtle and that some people said it was the best they've had. There was no apology at first, perhaps even a suggestion I was wrong not to enjoy it. I've looked through other reviews since to see if anyone else has had this experience, my reckoning is if this really is how they make it someone else will have taken exception to it before.
All I really wanted was someone to have a bite of the pudding and an acceptance it wasn't right. I emplored her to get the chef to try it. But I left feeling a little bit fobbed off (although we did get a complementary shot of lemoncello.)
I'm back soon for a big family meal, I'm really looking forward to it. But I'll be eating big before...
Read moreVery disappointed with my decision to choose Domo to celebrate my daughter’s graduation. Misunderstanding caused by the “aggressive behaviour” of restaurant management spoilt the night for my family.
I booked a table Domo because of the many good reviews I have read about this restaurant in Kelham Island. Unfortunately this turned out to be a horrible experience for my family because of the rude behaviour of the person in charged of guest service on the evening of 16 July 2024.
I brought along a mini bottle of champagne as a surprise celebratory gift for the graduate. I asked the waiter serving us if there was a corkage fee if we opened this bottle. He saw the size bottle and said it was small so he would waive the corkage. I was pleased with his goodwill and went ahead to order our food (a lot of food) and drinks. I even order a bottle of wine which he recommended as a gesture of his goodwill despite half of my table being non alcohol drinkers.
Midway through our dinner the person who is in charge of guest service comes over to clear some of our plates. She notices the small champagne bottle and accuses us of opening the bottle in the restaurant without her knowledge. Her tone was aggressive and very high handed. She was very surprised with my response in polite English - which was I did enquire about corkage and please check with your colleague before making any accusations. I added that I would happily pay for corkage if she wanted me to do so. Why would I want to ruin a celebratory dinner for such a small matter?
When she realised I had not done anything wrong I never saw her come around again. No apology. Sadly, her high handed and aggressive accusations spoilt the night for family. Will not recommend this restaurant. I would even take this further that say that this person was profiling me because my family and I look Chinese. It doesn’t mean foreign visitors to your country DO NOT understand the your customs and the practice of corkage at restaurants which is...
Read moreI am genuinely excited to receive a response to this review - whoever's been tasked with replying to the negative customer ratings has the flair of a heavily-biased fifteen-year-old smashing out bilious retorts to a 2010 Tweet criticizing their favourite B-lister. And now, on to my thoughts. We had heard great things about Domo, hence the choice for our joint-birthday venture. The serving staff were absolutely courteous, but rarely have I seen a team of people who looked as desperate to walk straight out the door mid-shift than this lot. I felt as though they might beg to exchange places with us at any moment, thrusting their aprons towards us with a desperate glint in their eye - instinctively I placed a kindly and watchful hand over my cutlery every time one of them drifted near. 2/5. The atmosphere was not unpleasant - somewhere between a decent Weatherspoons and your local Italian (and I frequent Spoons now and then, so that's not the snobby response you might assume). Basically, it had the air of a higher-end chain. Not the authenticity we had expected, but not a bad vibe. 3/5 Last but not least: the food. My partner ordered a Margherita and the house pale ale, and reported both to be delicious at the price. I ordered sashimi tuna in carasau crumb with mango mayo. The impressive technical skill required to produce what arrived in front of me was inversely proportionate to the justice the dish did to its composite parts, and indeed to the country from which it allegedly hailed - including the addition of some viciously sacarin tapioca pearls. A lightly seared steak, with a fresh mango salsa verde and some butter-roasted crushed new potatoes would have championed both the ingredients, and the spirit of the restaurant itself - 'Home'. Which is where we retreated less than an hour after our arrival, leaving with our hearts and alas our palates, quite...
