I wanted to try this place based on the 5-star reviews on Google. Gaard is a small coffee shop on a corner of a big building. As you can tell, I’m not from Sheffield 😅
I came at around 12pm on Friday. It wasn’t very busy, however I could hear a lot of people sat upstairs. I stayed downstairs as I needed to be somewhere soon. All the food is vegan, no alcohol or gelatine. Therefore, it’s 100% halal.
I was greeted by a kind member of staff who was happy to talk me through the baked goods, sandwiches and hot/cold beverages. I asked if all the bakery items were made fresh that day, and he said only the croissants and sausage rolls were baked fresh. So 75% of the bakery items were at least a day old. I appreciated his honesty, so I decided to stay and order since I had asked lots of questions.
I ordered the Pistachio Carrot Cake Slice, and a Matcha Latte. I was handed the cake slice straight away, but I wanted to have it with my hot drink, so I waited patiently for it. I could tell the cake wasn’t made fresh. It was tasty though, with carrots, walnuts and raisins. The icing on the top was just royal icing. It was extremely sweet for me, and apart from the pistachio pieces on the top, I wasn’t getting much pistachio flavour unfortunately. The matcha latte was brilliant! It wasn’t grassy or bitter. It had good quality matcha flavour with my choice of semi-skimmed milk, and beautiful latte art on top. I opted for a drink with no added sugar, and this hit the spot. It was a decent size too.
Gaard offers complimentary WiFi, however it is password protected, so you might want to ask the server for the password. It also offers students discounts, which was great for me. Overall, I had a good experience at this...
Read moreWhen coming into the cafe, the worker who served us was very rude. She didn’t give us time to think about our order and was not welcoming in the slightest. We ordered two BBQ chicken subs, the second one needing a 10 minute wait (which we were okay with). The first one was lovely, no faults, however the second one was made with a different type of slaw which was not brought to our attention until the waitress gave the sub to us. The different slaw tasted different, and if we were to have been asked, we would have declined the different slaw altogether. We took the sandwich back after one bite each, and the server offered us a refund through gritted teeth. When actually processing the refund she said ‘too much food in the end then was it?’ Which we thought was rude and accusatory, given our sole issue was the taste of the slaw, not that there was too much. Overall we had an uncomfortable experience and would not recommend- customer...
Read moreThe coffee is great here, no complaints about that, so great for takeaway. However, the only reason I wouldn’t return to this cute little cafe is because they’re not remote worker friendly, which is very disappointing! I’m not sure if it just one worker as it only happened to me once. But if you want to work here for more than an hour, they will make you buy something every hour. Last I was here, one waitress interrupted me TWICE in the middle of a meeting to pester me to buy something or leave! I understand supporting local businesses but come on now, every hour is unreasonable. I wonder if I was sat here with a friend for a casual chat, they would have done the same? Never have I experienced this at any other cafe. Highly disappointed as I’m a resident in the building above and would’ve loved to work from...
