We visited the Grand Kerala restaurant recently after it was highly recommended by a friend especially for the Indo-chinese food they serve. It's a nice and quiet little place on Carver Street, there is a paid car park right next to the restaurant, which was very convenient as it can be a busy area on weekends. Let me break down our food order along with the feedback. For drinks we ordered lime juice. It was very refreshing and tasty, so loved it. 1.Vegetable fried rice - it was good, tasteful, the rice was well cooked yet not sticky at all, just the way I like. 2.Chicken noodles - Again, the taste was good, my little one liked it. Only feedback would be the noodles were chopped (probably due to breaking it before boiling) into 2-3 inch pieces which made it difficult to eat with a fork. 3.chicken lollipop - This very pleasantly surprised me. I'm not a huge fan of chicken lollipops as most of the times they are too dry and chewy. But the chicken lollipop here were GOOD!!!! Cooked to perfection, soft and juicy, with a little hint of heat and a perfect sweet and tangy flavour to balance it all. I was happy (even got another portion of lollipop for takeaway). Definitely a must try. 4.Gobi Manchurian - it was tasty, perfect combination of the sauces. I liked it. My only feedback would be, please cut down on the oil a little bit. 5.chilly chicken gravy - Now this dish is close to my heart. But unfortunately I wasn't pleased with it, not due to the taste or flavour but because of the texture of the meat. The taste was really good. The heat, the tang and salt, all well balanced. But actual chicken was too dry and chewy. A suggestion for that would be to use boneless chicken thighs for this dish instead of chicken breast. Portion sizes were sufficient for 2 adults and 1 child. The dishes were reasonably priced. We spent £50 approx.
Service and atmosphere: Smiling faces all around. The hosts and the hostesses were very friendly and responsive. Kept us updated about the food. At one point we were feeling very cold and requested to increase the heating, to which out hostess informed us very politely that the central heating wasn't working and apologised. However, a gentleman came and switched on the electric heating on the wall, which shows that they value their customers comfort, so thank you for that 😊. But please fix the central heating especially ahead of the winter months.
Overall experience was good, definitely worth a second visit. There are some dishes on the menu which we want to try so we will definitely be back again. (the aroma of the dosas and the biriyani being served at the next table was really nice so that's definitely on our list for next time.) All the best to Grand...
Read moreAfter hearing numerous glowing reviews, we had high expectations for Grand Kerala Restaurant in Sheffield. Unfortunately, the reality was far from what we had hoped. Here’s a detailed breakdown of our dismal experience:
Prawns Fry: This dish was shockingly subpar. It was blatantly obvious that frozen prawns were used instead of fresh, and while the masala was decent, the poor quality of the prawns completely ruined the dish, leaving it tasteless and uninspiring.
Special Chattichoru: For what is supposedly their signature dish, the Special Chattichoru was nothing short of a disaster. Nearly every dish was poorly seasoned, especially lacking in salt, and the chicken dry fry was as hard as a rock. This was a thoroughly disappointing and below average dish, far from the star offering it claimed to be.
Beef Roast: The so called Beef Roast was a thinly veiled beef curry, diluted with watery gravy and randomly topped with sautéed onions. The presence of the onions seemed more like an afterthought than any attempt to elevate the dish. Overall, it was painfully mediocre, offering nothing to differentiate it from a basic beef curry.
Porotta: The only redeeming part of the meal was the Porotta. Freshly made and bursting with flavor, it was the sole highlight in an otherwise disastrous dining experience.
Hygiene: To make matters worse, the hygiene was downright unacceptable. The ladies’ restroom was in such a deplorable state that my wife felt compelled to leave immediately. For a restaurant that claims to be fine dining, the overall cleanliness was appalling. This is simply inexcusable.
In conclusion, despite the positive reviews we had heard, Grand Kerala Restaurant failed miserably to meet even basic standards. Apart from the Porotta, the dishes were substandard, and the lack of hygiene is unacceptable. I sincerely hope they take serious action to improve because this experience was nothing short of...
Read moreUpdating the review after multiple visits: Grand Kerala Restaurant in Sheffield truly stands out as the go-to place for authentic Kerala flavors. It's undoubtedly the only South Indian restaurant in the area that delivers the best in terms of taste and authenticity. We had got the food delivered twice in the beginning and then we went to the restaurant almost 3-4 times to have taste the flavours from the restaurant itself.
Food still is amazingly good. No doubt. However, the staff is not at all welcoming and pleasant. Hospitality of the staff is a turn down. Have felt this multiple times during our visit to us and as well as our friends and families we take there to taste the authentic food. Also a big NO for the hygiene of the handwash area and washroom. It’s not at all maintained well and it smells horrible. These two are a major turn down and because of this I’m changing my 5 star review to 3. A restaurant review consists of not only the food, but also the atmosphere, hospitality and hygiene of the place. May be in future if this feedback is taken care of, would love to update the review again.
1st review: We got our hands on their chicken biriyani and chatti choru. Was top notch in flavours. This time we had the food delivered home but definitely going back to have this experience from the...
