The Red Deer — Restaurant in Sheffield

Awful food. Everything tastes like its been cooked in the same oil/pan. Wasn't a pleasant visit. Mainly caters for Vegans so once that was in my head I couldn't enjoy my experience. Expensive too for what it was. 10 pound for over cooked and re-dippee roasties. Yorkshire puddings were like cakes with no flavour to them. I like my veg cooked not chucked in hot water for 5 mins. No mash too whats all that about? Gravy tasted like it had been reheated numerously and then had loads of fat chucked in for good measure. My son wouldn't eat a thing as he said it smelt of charity shops. My daughters had fish and the batter was so overcooked that the fish itself had turned yellow from all the oil! I've been before only this time very amateur. Menu not extensive, but OK. I chose a vegan meal and a starter. Out of our party of 8 I was the last to order and I'd chosen a starter too. It was well over an HOUR before meals came out ( not forgetting these are NOT complicated) and both my started AND main came together! Leaving most of my starter incase my mains went cold. Nice, basic but that's what I like. There was other complaints from the group. Staff did apologise for being busy however, was the chef outside smoking like he was when we entered? We had a lovely roast at the Red Deer on Sunday. The bar team were friendly and helpful, the beers on tap were fantastic - I had Titanic Plum Porter, which was amazing. I just wish I'd been able to stay for more! The roasts were a good size, nice thick slices of beef, veggies cooked well and not raw or overcooked. The potatoes seemed to be frozen ones, but still tasted good, and a nice Yorkshire Pudding. Desserts were lovely - delicious brownie and a choice of regular or vegan ice cream, and the sticky toffee pudding was hot, sweet and sticky.
