Vocation & Co. — Restaurant in Sheffield

This is a pleasant bar, currently one of only four run by the Vocation brewery based in Hebden Bridge. I find this bar to be a comfortable space in which I can spend a while having a drink without any qualms about having to move on. A large range of cask and keg beers are available including their core range with quirky names like 'Bread & Butter', 'Hop Skip and Juice' and 'Crush Hour'. They also have beers from Arbor, Lucky Saint and some collaborative brews, plus a range of ciders and even a grapefruit shandy has been spotted. They have a 'takeaway' fridge featuring a large range of their cans, bottles and even mini kegs. It must be said, however, that I only visit this bar because they have 'Heart & Soul' on cask which is gluten free. It would be good to see a couple of other beers available as GF but, for now, I appreciate whatever is available. A small selection of food is served here with burgers / subs, wings and fries available along with the usual sides. After speaking with the bar staff, I know that they can provide GF options with their burgers. However, it's not obvious by looking at the menu apart from the usual "dietary requirements or allergies" statement. Therefore, don't pass this by if you require GF, just ask the staff for further info. I will update this review if I try the food on a future visit. Have been a few times and it's been a comfortable, bright, clean and friendly place, but on a recent visit, when it was absolutely empty inside, I took refuge with a friend to sit and enjoy an evening when within 5 minutes one of the bar staff confronted us at the table and fairly passive aggressively shook us down asking us for a food or drinks order. It's not a table service place and we would've gone at our accord but this felt like a threat to order or leave.

I also have a rule that any where which charges for soda water (plain) isn't a respectable venue, and when ordering a soda water I was charged £1.50. I don't think we'll be returning or recommending business again after such an awkward and uncomfortable experience with the changing bar staff. The bar staff are great and so is the beer which is served in a wide range of measures so you're not always stuck with a pint if you've taken a gamble on something fruity (although the staff are always happy to give tasters).

The chips are brilliant, but the vegan burger I had was pretty bland with most of the flavour coming from a fatty sauce and pretty boring bun. Really could have done with some salad for extra texture, flavour, and to balance out the fatty saltyness of the burger.
