I have been visiting Porthcawl for the last couple of years, as my family have moved there. I am from London and my experience of South Wales, or Wales in general has been pretty limited until I found myself visiting relatives regularly. The offering where I live in terms of Fish and Chips, isn’t awe inspiring, so I was pretty keen to find a decent chippy on the coast. I stumbled across Finnegan’s after a day at the beach and was enticed by the reassuringly retro decor. I ordered the fish goujons and chips (the unlimited chips caught my attention at the time, as I was starving!) took my can of coke (part of the meal deal) and expected my fish to be sitting under a heat lamp, like back home. I was pretty surprised to hear that all fish was cooked to order so I took my seat and waited. After no time at all, I got my freshly cooked fish and chips. The manager also recommended the hot curry sauce, which was a great shout as it was really tasty! The fish was fresh, flaky and the batter spot on. I took full advantage of the unlimited chips as well. It was exactly what I wanted, proper restaurant quality food and although not cheap, better value than what you would get at a gastro pub. I have been having Finnegan’s fish and chips every time I am in Wales and the manager always recognises me and makes me feel welcome. The Welsh charm from all of the staff really adds to the place. I don't usually write reviews, but Finnegan’s has become such a big part of my trips to Porthcawl, I wanted to shout about a business that everyone should experience! If you are in Porthcawl (which itself is lovely!), definitely go...
Read moreThe staff were lovely and friendly but the food was a bit of a let down. We ordered a fish and chips, scampi and chips and chicken and mushroom pie and nothing tasted that great, it was all a bit bland. The vinegar was also very watered down and tasted of nothing. Even though the staff were nice about everything and refunded a cheese rissole, the experience wasn't great and I wouldn't visit again.
Reply: Google reviews is hardly a social media, it's a place to write about experiences which is exactly what I did. I put my honest opinion on here because I think it's important for people who want to visit to know what other experiences are like.
We came to your shop because it had good reviews and were disappointed that it didn't match up to them. I absolutely did not get a kick out of putting up a review, as you'll see, I put 5 stars for service because I appreciate that the service was indeed good, just that the food wasn't. I have now changed the stars down to 2, and the overall stars down to 1 because I don't appreciate your attitude to my very honest and fair review.
The whole point of Google reviews is to review what restaurants are like, I honestly don't know what you expected. My review mentioned all the good things about the restaurant e.g. the friendly staff and the speedy refund of the rissole so I don't understand why you are being so passive aggressive with your reply.
Than you for your invitation to come back but you have just cemented my decision...
Read moreSaw this place and after researching it on my phone decided to give it a try. As shown below we ordered two regular cod and chips and one extra large cod and chips. The large one came with two pieces of cod rather than one big one which turned out to be ok as two people were sharing it anyway. Quality is really good and by current standards this is the best fish and chips I’ve had in quite some time. Chips were soft, quality potato was used and the fish batter was tasty. It’s not cheap but then I’ve wasted money on sub par fish and chips so many times that it probably adds up to hundreds. Would have given it full 5 stars but guy behind the counter completely ignored my request for Tomato ketchup and was very pushy about adding tartare sauces to my order. Each small serving you see below is £1 each. However it’s made in house and is lovely. Final verdict: this place deserves 3 cheers for keeping the dying institution of fish and...
