We stayed at The Rose and Crown, Warwick on a Sunday evening, two years ago, and had an excellent visit. On that occasion the pub was owned by Green King, and we stayed in a nearby building owned by the pub, overlooking Market Place. We have just returned from our second visit to The Rose and Crown, now in the hands of Peach Pubs, and what a mistake that was. |Firstly, we arrived at 2:55pm for a 3pm check-in, our room was not ready for nearly and hour. Before being shown to our room, which on this occasion was above the pub itself, we were given a guided tour of the rear of the pub, highlighting the fire escape route and access to the hotel itself when we return later in the evening. This became very relevant much later on. Our room – Room 5 was very large, clean with a comfortable King bed, a single bed plus a fold-up bed. To access this room required negotiating several flights of narrow, twisting stairs. The shower was very much in need of renovation or replacement, the spray from the shower head barely touched the bath, the water falling mostly on to the taps. Eight cartons of Lakeland milk in the room were out of date, dated April 2025. |We ate in the pub in the evening, the lunch time menu which had plenty of choice, was replaced by the evening menu, with a very limited menu, mainly Sunday roasts, which they stopped serving at 8pm. The roast dinner was actually okay. The bar stops serving at 9pm on Sundays, 10pm the rest of the week. Following on from this disappointment, we had a couple of drinks in Market Place, which was a very enjoyable experience.||The real issue arose when we attempted to access our room in the hotel, around 10:30pm that evening. As was expected, The Rose and Crown pub was in complete darkness, not surprising as it stopped serving at 9pm. We walked around the line of buildings, past The Globe pub, most of which was pretty dark, onto Theatre Street, where fortunately, I managed to find an unmarked open gateway, which led to a set of metal stairs leading up the first floor of an equally unmarked building. I entered a door which was ajar, which led into what appeared to be an employee’s storage area. A second door leading off the is room, led into what I now recognised as our hotel.||We will certainly not be staying at this...
Read moreI needed somewhere to stay overnight for a business trip, and this venue looked a decent place to stay.||On arrival, the staff were welcoming, and the pub looked to be a nice venue. ||It was disappointing not to have parking, not a massive issue as there was a car park a short walk away.||The stairwell leading from the pub to the accommodation, however, left a lot to be desired and left me fearing for what I had let myself in for. It was somewhat reminiscent of a cross-between a 1980s office block and RIgsby's accommodation. Thankfully, the room was an improvement with plenty of space, and the usual tea and coffee facilities.||||There were, however, some significant issues which would stop me from returning:||||When I tried to have a bath, I realised after running the water for long enough to fill, that it was almost empty. On checking, the plug sat proud, meaning water was emptying almost as fast as it was filling.||||The most concerning part was only discovered late in the evening. ||I had been out for the evening, returning around 11 pm. When I returned, I found the pub to be closed and my key would not fit the lock. Thankfully I could hear someone inside, who eventually heard me banging on the door and window. Heaven knows how I would have got in had I arrived back any later! If there was another way to get in, I wasn't informed when I checked in. I also didn't expect to have to be back by a curfew - I haven't had one of those since childhood!||||Shortly after I got back, another guest asked if I knew how to get back out again - I don't know if he managed...
