Papa's Traditional Fish & Chips — Restaurant in Weston-super-Mare

Never had cause to complain about the food, neither have countless family members & friends I've recommended Papas to, upon their frequent visits (not that they need recommendations). The quality of food speaks for itself & when buying in shop to takeaway, I find them to be excellent value for money. I've also eaten in the restaurant & thoroughly enjoyed my meals & the wonderful, welcoming service from their longstanding waitress.

However today 8/8/2022 at approx 8:20pm, I was very disappointed & upset with the awful attitude of what I assume to be a new member of staff. He obviously misheard my order, (which is understandable behind covid screens) When he told me the price I realised the error, and very politely corrected him. I did find it odd that he asked me twice if I wanted salt & vinegar when I placed my order, then he asked me again when it was ready to go, at which point I repeated myself politely. I also repeated my request for mayonnaise because he was either hard-of-hearing, or I didn't speak loudly enough when I placed my order. The onus is on him to ask me to repeat myself if I was speaking too quietly.

After explaining what my original order was, he became very rude, glaring at me repeatedly, & when he handed the change over he slammed it onto the counter & handed me another pile of change by slamming it onto the counter. It was a glaringly aggressive & offensive act. At this point I told him there was no point in blaming me for the mistake & that there was no need to be so aggressive. I was very upset & perhaps came across too strongly but I didn't swear, I just thought he should know that his behaviour was completely out of line & intimidatingly aggressive.

Unfortunately a drunken thug sitting on the other side of the shop decided to pipe in & defend him by saying that I had ordered what he originally thought I asked for. Absolute poppycock. I assume the thug has issues with women. He wouldn't have a clue what I ordered, he was too far away & not paying attention, alternatively, I was indeed, talking too softly.

Mistakes happen, it wasn't an issue for me at all, until this new member of staff decided it was appropriate to treat customers in such an aggressive & disrespectful manner over such a petty point. I can't help wondering if he would have reacted in the same way with a fellow "bro". Very disappointing & upsetting indeed. Food is fine; service very poor though which tbh ruins your experience of going here. 5 of us were booked in for a meal a few nights ago & were seated straight away, however the 2 women serving the tables are extremely abrupt & rude - especially the tall one taking the orders - and just not very good at their jobs in the way they deal with people & making mistakes along the way too. Both are from abroad & it not a language barrier thing as they spoke English, it was just very direct talking & body language with no sort of pleasant customer interaction whatsoever. Extremely abrupt. When food did arrive at table the woman taking orders had missed off a meal (probably because in the way she was doing things & not properly listening, instead just hurrying people along as quickly as possible) so my friend ended up eating at a different time than the rest of us as that had to be rectified. Second woman, wearing gloves & mask, was abrupt too when sorting out the missing meal - wasn't any apology at all for this, just shot off to get more grub. When paying the bill at the end & taking our money, no real "thanks alot, hope all ok, look forward to seeing you again" etc - just a sort of put in your pin number, you want a receipt, walk away... Just extremely poor people & service skills from the staff here. Worst was to come before we all left - when finishing off our drinks, the tall female staff member shot over to us, leaning straight across myself & put her fingers in my friends wine to take the glasses away before she'd even finished the drink ! (Again, this due to keep rushing things & not waiting). didn't really apologize, more that they'll replace it, but quite frankly we'd all had enough of the very cold & brash approach from the staff so just decided to get up & leave - that's what the 2 women wanted I think so they could get us out as quickly as possible to reuse the table for more money generators, sorry I mean customers! (yes, we were paying customers - you had over £100 out of our group - not that we were really treated like that though).
