We had dinner at Brentwood last night for the first time since Houston’s closed. Houston’s was our favorite restaurant so it is hard to not compare. I ordered the ribs with baked beans and cornbread and coleslaw. My wife had the red trout with Parmesan broccoli and whipped potatoes. My meal was okay but not great. The coleslaw was heavily mayonnaise based and just mediocre. The baked beans weren’t as good as Houston’s but my wife tasted them and thought they were good. We both loved the cornbread that was served with the beans. My wife thought the trout was exceptional with lovely subtle spices. The broccoli was steamed perfectly, still crunchy and the Parmesan added nice flavor. The whipped potatoes were light and fluffy but no special flavoring…garlic might have added some zest to them. Our service was inadequate and poor. We received our drinks right away and after 10 minutes, the server had not returned to take our order, or even to check if we wanted an appetizer. I flagged down another server who immediately took our order, and said he would place it and have the original server deliver it. The original server had not made an appearance after 15 minutes. She delivered our meal, didn’t ask if we needed anything else and walked away. She never checked in with us again until our meal was over. The other server, despite his own busy tables, checked in on us as he was going by. The original server then came by to collect our plates and instead of asking if we wanted dessert or after dinner drink or coffee, she inquired “Are you done?” It was abysmal attitude and service for an upscale restaurant, only saved by the other server. We flagged him down again and gave him a 25% cash tip for the service our server didn’t provide, and left a 5% tip for the original server on our credit card. As we left, the hostess was chatting and laughing with a server or other hostess and never acknowledged us leaving. That would never have happened at Houston’s. Every staff member with Houston’s were trained to treat customers as special. The hostesses, except in a crowded waiting situation, would always acknowledge departing customers with a smile and a comment that they hoped we enjoyed our meal and hoped to see us again. That is why they had crowds every day and loyal return customers. My wife would go back for the trout and I would try something else, but if we had the same server, we would ask the manager for a different one. The other server who helped us was terrific. Overall we were disappointed. The interior looks the same (artwork is just blah compared to Houston’s artwork) but overall, we still miss Houston’s and this experience didn’t give us a similar experience. We were regulars. Maybe our comparison is not fair but may go back once again to see if ours was a...
Read moreForgot Houston's used to be in this plaza. Didn't realize another restaurant moved into the space. Wanted to try something new in the area. My boyfriend and I walked in on a Sunday about 3:30 to an empty hostess stand. There were 2 people seated and maybe one or two at the bar. After about 5 minutes, our waitress Claudia assisted us and took us to our table. She informed us that she would be our server for the evening. We asked for a few moments to peruse the menu, and Claudia came back to take our drink orders. She brought our drinks after a long wait, and asked whether we wanted apps. We gave app orders and waited about 15 minutes before Claudia came to take our dinner order. I'm not sure how long we waited for the food after our apps arrived, but I feel like it was longer than usual. By this time a hostess appeared at the front. My prime rib came out with white fat on it. (Fat turns white when cold.) And the meat WAS cold. Probably from sitting so long to be brought to our table! BF had ribs and fries. He said they were just okay. I decided I'd take my food home for lunch the next day so I could cook it properly. Another waitress who was putting glasses on the tables, brought us the check. No mention of a shift change or why she was now helping us. She took my payment and brought back a receipt with an almost $50 extra tacked on. She removed it when I brought it to her attention. When I looked at the front, the hostess had disappeared again. And when we left, no hostess was at the front. My BF had stomach issues for the rest of the night. He missed the end of the movie we'd gone to see after leaving Brentwood. Optics are important. Not sure why there wasn't a hostess posted at the front, but to enter a restaurant and be left waiting is not a very good introduction to the customer. And I would suggest the waitstaff be reminded to be consistently responsive when serving a table. I understand restaurants get busy, but there were only 3 tables, so not sure what the lags were about. Also, due to the lags, the food not only got cold, but was served cold! You don't serve congealed fat on cold meat. The plate should have never made it to the table. And I don't know why I was charged almost $50 extra dollars on my tab. But, one could make a nice chunk of change inflating customer's bills. I hope that is not the case. As for BF, not sure why his stomach was upset. But, I don't think I could convince him to come back here. We won't be back anyway. Too many issues-slow service, check problems, illness....

Yes, Houston's was my most favorite restaurant in all of DFW. One night in June of 2020 during COVID, it was packed up with a lot of people not wearing masks and not social distancing. I took a big risk that night and waited patiently for a place to sit to enjoy my favorite meal. I did, and met some nice people and never contracted COVID, but yet I had no knowledge that that would be my last time dining at Houston's. I was shocked to learn they have permanently closed via Google Maps. Hillstone I don't think they cook their meals as good as Houston's. I only went to Hillstone on Wednesdays to try to get a bowl of tortilla soup, which that has been my favorite since my teens! But since COVID, they only serve their daily soups during lunch hours until they run out. So then I began to wonder "what's going to be my new favorite restaurant?"
Until Brentwood opened in mid 2022, I checked it out on Google Maps and saw the pictures of their plates and menu that resembled Houston's. At the time it had a 4.2 rating and reading reviews, I thought it was a knock off (as some stated) and didn't think it would be the same. So I continued on.
This past May I discovered Charleston's restaurant in West Fort Worth as they too have a very similar concept to Houston's and learned they were related. They're really good but quite a drive. So one Friday in June, I finally decided to give Brentwood a chance, seeing that their rating has increased. Setting foot back in this place after five years, seeing the atmosphere barely changed, sure felt good. I started with the Cesar salad and realized that was definitely the true Houston's taste! Then I got the smoked salmon and was just enjoyed that signature taste. Just the chef's dressing has a pickley taste and the toast points are a little softer, but still good. Then my next visit, I saw that they serve tortilla soup on Saturdays all day and evening! And trying a bowl - WOW - exactly as how I remembered! The Brentwood is now my favorite! I'm sorry for doubting this place at first, but my faith in them has been restored! Whether if they are related to Houston's or not, I am glad they are continuing with...
