I bought a birthday cake here for my daughters first two birthdays and was going to again for her third but opted not to. Her first birthday cake was exactly as visioned. Her second birthday cake I wanted was a unicorn cake like such you see on Pinterest and crafted in stl. I wanted it there since I had a good experience before. They told me they couldn’t do it that way last year but could do a sheet cake with a drawn unicorn so I obliged. I didn’t end up liking the look of it but it was what it was. Yesterday I went in to order her third birthday cake and there were the unicorn cake I wanted last year displayed all along the wall (somewhat irritating). I wanted a 3 layer 8 or 9 inch round. They gave me trouble about that because they normally just do two but I prefer the way a 3 layer looks better. I also just wanted a filling to which they said they won’t do on a 3 tier cake and then told them I wanted light pink rosettes covering the cake and they told me they wouldn’t do them on a 3 tier cake to which I pointed out the bottom of a wedding cake that was displayed and said that had rosettes. The response was “that’s a wedding cake”. I asked what is the reason I couldn’t do rosettes and she told me “I don’t have an answer for that it’s just what the book says” finally just said I would pass. I expected and was more than willing to pay up charges for the extra layer and rosette design as I know that is common along with paying for the filling. I just left. They made it too difficult. So I called the bakery that did the cake for my wedding and they were much more accommodating. Said oh you want 3 layers, it’ll be extra, yes we can do rosettes but it’ll be extra, and finally yes we can do a filling and have several to choose from and again it’ll be extra to which I expected and obliged. I won’t be going to this shop anymore. Just lost a repeat customer for not only my daughters birthday cakes but everything else we stop in and get there. They’re too frustrating...
Read moreThere is a reason Federhofer's has been in business for over 50 years! This place is the real deal, so don't miss the opportunity to visit and pick up some delicious bakery products or use them for a special occasion. I offered to get a cake for my grandson's first birthday, and I wanted something special. I searched for bakeries in St. Louis could make specialty cakes, and I thought I had a vendor selected. My initial consultation with them was fine, but due to the difficulties I had getting the vendor to return calls and getting the order finalized, I lost confidence in their ability to handle the order. I found myself with less than two weeks to find another bakery to make the cake. I called Federhofer's, and without hesitation they said they could fulfill the order. By the next day, the order was finalized and pick up date and time was confirmed. When I arrived to pick up the cake, it looked just like the design I requested, and I was so pleased! But, because the cake was a two-tier cake, it would not have transported safely to its destination in my car. That's when Federhofer's really came to my rescue. It had been pouring rain all morning, and I knew nobody else was available to help deliver the cake. Federhofer's wanted to make sure the cake arrived at its destination intact, so they loaded the cake into one of their cars and followed me to my daughter and son-in-law's home nearby. Talk about customer service!! The cake was not only beautifully decorated, it was absolutely delicious. Their buttercream icing is the best I've tasted anywhere, and the cake was rich and moist - just perfect! In addition to the tiered cake, I ordered a small smash cake as well. That, too, was just perfect! I can't say enough good things about Federhofer's. It will certainly be my bakery of choice whenever I need baked goods or something for a...
Read moreRecapture the wonder of Christmas, go to this place! I would give them more stars if I could.
My mom always used to bake German Anise Cookies (Springerle) every year. I tried baking some myself last year, but it was a long involved process (you air dry them overnight before baking) and mine came out a bit dry (a couple of slices of apple in the cookie jar soften them right up). My brother has been hinting lately that he wanted some more, but I just haven't felt like repeating that process. Today we tried a local grocery store, with a German sounding name, but they didn't have any today. I asked the Bakery person if Federhofer's might have any. She said they might and that they just run over to Federhofer's if a customer puts in a special request, so I decided to give them a try.
As soon as I walked in the door I finally felt the Christmas Spirit that I have lacked up to now. The pastries were beautiful and I wanted to try every one. I felt that childlike sense of wonder that I haven't felt for a very long time. They had Springerle! and Grinch Cookies and caramel apricot Danish pastries that were almost a DayGlo orange (in a good way), and baklava. I had to grab just a few things and leave before I emptied my bank account. And the customer service was great. A tradition for 53 years.
I don't know how many times I have driven by Federhorfer's with out stopping. I have only been back in St Louis for 2 years after being away for a long hiatus. I have a vague memory of stopping by a few times with my mom. I won't make the mistake of driving by without...
