Calvillos buffet is a must try. We have been stopping here consistently for many years on our way up and on our way back from central Colorado.
Their buffet is not only stacked with a surprising variety of tasty Mexican main courses however you can also ask the staff in the kitchen to make anything you'd like, actually anything!
Next to the main courses there's a nice lady who makes fresh flour tortillas and behind you there's an array of fresh veggies and like 5 unique salsas. As if that isn't enough there is always a large array of perfectly ripe fruit. They have the standards: cantaloupe, strawberries, pineapple but then also have less common fruits like cactus fruit, kiwis, and so on. Of course it all depends on season. There also always several desserts ranging from tapioca pudding to popsicles to flan and tres leeches cake. This is a really a place where everyone can find exactly what they're looking for. The best part? The dinner buffet when we went (a Monday in August) was $11 per person. We've also tried enchiladas and various a la cart options which are also super tasty (and sometimes come with a fresh sopapia!)
I do have one warning though. I have found that the buffet experience is much much better if you go at or slightly before peak lunch and dinner times otherwise we have found things aren't quite as hot off the pan.
The staff is also fantastically friendly and always making sure you are enjoying your self. This is definitely one of the best restaurants...
Read moreThis is one of those situations where I was stuck between three stars and four stars. The waiter was worth 4 stars but the food quality was more closer to two star range.
Pros: Prices are a little mixed; Very fair for some items, and overpriced for others. Kind of confusing. A fish dish was only $13 whereas a bowl of simple sautéed mushrooms was $7 ??? The front end service was average, but our waiter was very attentive, which made it better. Everyone was very friendly, just not very punctilious. The place is very eclectic with lots of little gifts to look at, and buy if you wish
Cons: Overall quality of the food was not that great. I had a fish dish. The fish was decent for frozen fish, but the enchilada I had was chewy and not that good and the rice was in my opinion not seasoned very well. The margarita was way too syrupy and way too sweet. It was also served in a plastic glass which was offputting. The chips and salsa also did not taste super fresh to me. The chips were kind of on the chewy side and that's also had a strange kind of sour taste to it. Not sure what that's about. Maybe from sitting too long???
In summation; obviously this is not a foodie town. It's a stop on the way to do other things or sleep at a hotel. For that purpose, this restaurant is probably one of the better ones in town from what I have seen. Not a lot of choices here. If we come to Alamosa again, we will probably come to this...
Read moreOur waiter Diego was AMAZING! Gave fantastic recommendations on which margaritas to get (I forget the name but it was like a pastel purple color and on the rocks with that one is the way to go!). We went on Mothers day and despite it being busy and a holiday Diego and all the other wait staff were amazingly attentive and even spent lots of time at our table chatting with us and letting our kids tell him stories. They truly made it feel like you were dining with family. The experience alone would have left me happy, but in the name of all things holy THE FOOD IS ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! We got the carnitas with homemade corn tortillas (wow is that good), the combo platter, a cheese quesadila, a super quesadilla, a bean and cheese burrito and one of my crazy kiddos ordered a grilled cheese (which she said was delicious but was so in awe of our food she ate the whole grilled cheese and 1/4 of our combo platter 🤣) and we finished with cinnamon sugar sopapilas. After eating more than I thought was humanly possible for 6 people we still have enough leftovers for at least two more meals. Best $100 I've spent on 6 meals, a margarita, 6 drinks and dessert. This place is a much stop!!! It was the icing on the cake for mothers day and I'd drive the 5 hours from FOCO just to eat...
