My expectations for Asian food are generally lower in rural towns; after a number of poor experiences I tend to avoid seafood dishes especially.
However, now under new ownership from sometime in 2021, Thai House in Alamosa compares favorably with Thai food I have had in Colorado Springs, where I have sampled food from several Thai restaurants.
We had Pad Thai and Pad Kee Mao (Drunken noodles) and the flavors were really good with fresh ingredients. Delicious!
We also sampled some salmon sushi with low expectations and we were pleasantly surprised. Finally a rural Asian restaurant that gets the rice correct (yes, rice wine vinegar is essential) and the salmon was fresh and detectible.
My only criticism was the pineapple garnish in the pineapple sake was canned - fresh fruit would've been better but I can't remember the last time I saw fresh pineapple in a local grocery store here, so I am not reducing my rating. That's just a nitpic.
Our server seated us immediately and the music was fun and the atmosphere casual. Food took 10 - 15 minutes to come out.
Overall a really great experience. If you tried the old Thai House before it changed ownership during the pandemic it's worth coming back.
If you're visiting the sand dunes and you want some tasty Thai or sushi I can happily...
Read moreOn the east end of the San Luis Valley in Alamosa, Colorado right on highway 160 we found a gem. If you like Thai food and we really do, you will love this restaurant. The owners are new to the area and opened about 3 months ago. Called Thai House this restaurant has been there for several years and the previous owners closed it after COVID hit the valley. Our waiter and host did an excellent job even bringing me a pillow to sit on when he saw that I was having difficulty reaching the table top. The food was excellent. Everything was freshly made even the ice tea. The veggies were crisp. The noodles in the pad thai were tender but not mushy. It was perhaps the best pad thai (we had the pork made with fresh large tender slices of pork) I have ever had in the United States. The pork fried rice was made with fresh tender slices of pork also and fresh vegetables. I could go on and on here but just know that we ordered several dishes and everyone of them was fresh and delicious. Just a note. They do not have their liquor license yet but we know that can take some time in Colorado. Drinks are on the menu but they can not...
Read moreAte here while traveling though due to the good ratings, sadly, those ratings did not reflect our experience.
Was seated quickly, but waited over 10 min for anyone to come take our order even for drinks. We quickly ordered, beverages, appetizers, and sushi. The drinks came out quickly, the appetizer was reasonably quick, but initially was incorrect. It was then over 45 minutes to receive our sushi.
I realize staff shortages are real and it was busy so that is not the primary reason for the lower rating, but rather the food quality.
The egg rolls tasted like they were the frozen ones you can purchase at the store, and were not crispy nor flavorful. The most disappointing part though was the sushi. I will agree with other reviews here and say the size of the rolls was massive, too large to possibly eat in one bite. The sushi itself was bland, soggy, and did not taste or seem fresh.
I understand also this is a smaller town, but had to leave a review as a caution to those, who like us, saw the positive reviews and made a decision to eat here. Experience was more closely aligned with...
