Y'all are not ready for opening. I placed an order online from Guava Tree Cafe, who I am reviewing separately. They said "Go to the back door pickup, door #7." Upon arriving at the building, it took a moment to find the singular "Back door to-go" sign. Beyond that one sign, there is no other signage. The doors were not numbered and did not have signs indicating which door corresponded to which business. I ran into an employee going into one of the doors who asked what I was looking for, I told her I was picking up from Guava Tree, she said "I think it's the door down at the end." But as I said, there was no signage and no door numbering that I could see, and no instructions posted as to HOW to go about getting my food. I called Guava Tree multiple times and was not able to get through. So, I went inside. It was very crowded (I'm guessing above the 50% capacity for PATIO seating, and this is an indoor venue which is still limited to 25% capacity, but like I said that's just a guess). I will say it seemed very well ventilated.
I would estimate that half of the employees I saw were wearing masks improperly - most covering their mouths but not noses. Many employees were removing their masks as they pleased, and not washing or sanitizing their hands after handling their masks. Some employees wore a plastic face shield, but were not wearing a mask underneath. Those face shields are designed to make a face mask more effective, not to take the place of a face mask. I saw someone who I assume was the owner or manager of Guava Tree high-fiving customers as he brought food out - he was wearing gloves that he did not appear to change between high-fiving and returning to food prep. That's a potential health hazard.
While I appreciate that customers are required to wear masks to enter, being allowed to remove the mask once seated kinda defeats the purpose? Obviously there's no way to use a restaurant/bar with a mask on, which is why I say y'all aren't ready to open yet. This pandemic is not even close to over, and I feel like this is not the proper time to be undertaking such an expansive and complicated opening. I do understand the effort and investment that has gone into opening; I was really excited for it! But things have changed and adjustments have to be made. Perhaps most importantly there need to be huge improvements to the carryout options so that these businesses can safely operate. I felt unsafe going inside and will not be returning in the forseeable future.
** Edit because I couldn't figure out how to reply directly to the owner's response! Thank you for your reply. I am glad that you are taking this seriously and that you will be taking steps to improve. I was welcomed in by a security employee who seemed diligent, so it's good to hear that they're keeping an accurate count and that you're keeping occupancy well below the limits. I've added a star because I obviously made some false estimates, but I think the low rating is still true - to THIS experience. I am interested in using carry-out services once procedure and hygiene practices are solidified, and I am excited to hang out there once we are out of this pandemic. It is a...
Read moreBias staff. Refuses to serve water to or acknowledge group of minorities. I was shocked to see the difference in treatment of a minority groups during my 2 separate visits this week. I watched how roundly the bartender was when he informed a group of mixed minority of distancing rules. Which I seen them do in a polite way to a group of non-minorities on my previous visit (in the same week/ during the same rules). The group abided by the rules & separated to different patios . The staff took there request for water then never brought them water. They proceeded to ignore the small group , as if they didn't exist. I felt disgusted with the in justice I was watching unfold. It's crazy to see the level of disrespect in the voice of the bartender when dealing with this group. And the comments he had out loud after the group left. It's clear to me that it's ok for the staff to treat people poorly based on there appearance, Race & Perceived Wealth. So I will no longer be visiting or suggesting this location to people in our neighborhood. I wished I filmed it, because that would have been a great example of injustice & something for there boss to see. If they even care about teaching there staff to treat...
