Read moreWent by Critics Choice this afternoon for lunch. Yep. It’s a good choice. I love the retro feel of the place. It’s a family-run business with a waitress whom I wish was everywhere i went. (Very, very dry humor, but not sarcastic. Very kind lady) It was a quiet afternoon in downtown Alexandria and we were the only customers at that time. It’s a sandwich shop. But, oh yes, these folks know how to make sandwiches. My club sandwich on rye was exactly that. Very good meats and a smooth creamy cheese, with crisp cold lettuce, tomato, with just enough mayo on toasted rye. Skyler had a yummy roast beef sandwich with gravy (on a kaiser roll). Stephanie’s corned beef looked phenomenal. We requested an order of fries. When crinkle fries are cooked just right, they are crisp, light, and stay good even as they cool. Yes, those are the fries we had. They call them ‘freedom fries.’ And it felt like freedom indeed from all the wanna-be fries that i’ve had. And Elijah’s personal pan pepperoni pizza looked perfect. Not too dark or too light. Well cooked food for a growing boy. The hot tea we had was perfectly brewed If you go, expect a good sandwich in an atmosphere from the last century. Leave knowing you have just had a very good sandwich with a nice relaxed atmosphere in a family run business which cares about the quality of their food and the comfort of their customers. Yep, i’m going back. PS: When i spoke to the sweet owner, she did mention that she loved collecting clowns. Actually, there was memorabilia from several different genres. A little Disney, a little of the Hollywood stars from the 50’s, a holiday tree, beautiful holiday wreath, some gorgeous dolls, and a few clowns. The room was large enough that it didn’t seem...
Read moreThis is a great neighborhood gem in downtown Alexandria. Service was excellent, menu offers a variety. We had the Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich and Italian Grinder. Philly Steak was thinly sliced with peppers, onions, mushrooms, provolone and mayo. Great flavor and oh so tender. The roll was deliciously toasted. The Grinder was the standout today. A generous selection of Italian meats, cheeses, lettuce, tomato and sweet banana peppers dressed with a flavorful, homemade vinaigrette on a delicious roll and finished in the oven. It was excellent! This family owned business is inviting and feels like home with very good food. We...
