I visited Bruster's for the first time in a decade this past weekend. I brought my wife with me too because she is an ice cream lover like me, has never experienced Bruster's ice cream, and we had a coupon for buy one, get one free waffle cones.
First off I did not remember Bruster's being so expensive. The price for one waffle cone is nearly $7 after tax! That's not even with any toppings. The other two ice cream places we frequently visit, Twistee Treat and Topper's Creamery, only charge $3 to $4 for a large cup or cone (with toppings) by comparison. While we waited in line there was a family of three in front of us and I remember the father complaining that they were charging him $17 for two waffle cones and a sundae, even with a coupon.
That was another big issue we experienced on that Saturday evening. There are three different windows for customers to order ice cream at. However, the windows are wrapped around the building and there is no sense in direction or queue line to stand in. Basically you have to pick a window and hope you picked the quickest line.
We picked the closest window to the parking lot and only had two groups (five people in total) wait in front of us. Unfortunately, it took 15 minutes for us to finally get to the window, with others getting their orders completed in other windows minutes after we had arrived in line.
The young girl behind the window tried to be sincere with us, but she was clearly flustered that evening. We ordered two large waffle cones and it took her more than five minutes to fulfill our order. On her first attempt to make my wife's order, she broke the cone before reaching the window and had to remake it.
My wife ordered two different flavors. Caramel Saltwater Taffy and Cookies & Cream. The first flavor was too sweet to her liking, but she enjoyed the Cookies & Cream flavor. Unfortunately her cone was brittle and began to break on its own before she was even 1/3 of the way complete.
I myself ordered two flavors as well. Chocolate Peanut Butter with Buckeyes and Double Chocolate Brownie. The Chocolate Peanut Butter was delicious, as I felt like I was eating a Reese's cup in frozen cream form. I was disappointed with the Double Chocolate Brownie, as I hardly got any brownie flavor in my two scoops and it tasted more like just chocolate ice cream. Much like my wife I too experienced a cone malfunction, with the bottom of the cone breaking when I got to the halfway point.
The ice cream itself was ok and didn't taste like something that you could find in the freezer section of your local grocery store. Also they are generous with the size of their scoops.
That said their customer service was far from spectacular, considering we had to wait about 20 minutes for two ice cream cones. The cones themselves are extremely fragile. Lastly unless you are in possession of a BOGO coupon, there is a good chance you'll wind up spending at least $15 on ice cream for just you and your partner.
Growing up in Apopka Bruster's was a staple of my late childhood until they closed their location on Rock Springs Road. I expected to partially relive my childhood on Saturday night at this location, but was instead reminded that there are better ice cream...

Read moreI don’t do this often but this is my second time with the same employee that just has a disgusting attitude. She’s blonde, with blue eyes and always has two braids…
The first time we encountered her my boyfriend asked her for a cup and spoon for my waffle cone due to the ice cream melting. He asked politely for it and she got an attitude and provided him with a cup only, he then asked for a spoon and she ignored him. I then got out of the car to ask for my spoon, I watched her watch me for about 5 minutes that I unfortunately had to interrupt another customer to get my spoon..
This experience was a little bit different. She was friendly at first, once I was asked to provide a signature and left $0.00 tip she snatched the receipt and pen from me. I asked if it was an issue that I didn’t tip, her attitude changed so quickly that I HAD to ask “is it an issue that I didn’t tip”???? Weird of you to expect a tip and then be rude when you...
