Used to really enjoy going to this place. It's always been expensive. But with the great selection that it has had in the past, it was worth the drive and a nice treat once in a while. Plus, I'm always willing to pay a little more to a small local business that has good service and delivers a quality product. Decided to take a short roadtrip with the family on a Saturday evening to see if it was still as good as it has been in the past. First off, the service was fine and the young lady that helped us was very pleasant. But... it's 6:00 pm and there's only 1/3 of a tray of old fashioned donuts, about 8 or so assorted pastries and 20+ empty trays left in the display case 2-1/2 hours before closing. I'm really hoping that they had a huge rush right before we got there that cleaned them out. When you're paying over 2 bucks a donut they should at least have a good selection. Maple bars? Cinnamon sugar twists? Fritters? Raised? Nope... not this time. Hopefully just a fluke... but I kinda doubt it. Really hope they get back to what they used to be. It would be a shame to see them go the same way that so many other long standing small businesses have...
Read moreI've been going to the Donut House for about 20 years back when it was actually open 24 hours and the best time to go there was 2:00 a.m. but covid happened and they haven't been open 24 hours since. I would give them five stars but their prices have gotten ridiculous. Their best donut is the Angel Cream it's like monster size Twinkie but with donut skin instead of twinkie skin. It's the best 🍩 in the world. It used to be $1.25 and now it's $3.99. Do I buy it at that ridiculous amount, yes because I don't know how to make it myself. If I knew how to make Twinkie fluff then I would make my own. But I don't and it's good. They do not cheat you out of the good stuff. You want icing it's going to have icing, if you want something stuffed inside that donut it'll be stuffed. If you're coming here looking for something that's healthy you won't find it here it's a donut shop. I'm guessing if you are healthy eater you wouldn't come to a donut shop in the first place. I don't drink coffee so I can't judge their coffee but I've had the Italian sodes a couple times and...
Read moreThe Donut House is a small bakery located along the main drag through Anacortes. The staff is friendly and attentive, and the bakery offers the standard set of pastry items, coffee, etc. that you'd expect. There is decent parking along the side of the building, with limited indoor seating. The bakery is open 24 hours a day.
But none of that matters. What matters is, they make THE BEST apple fritter on the planet! They are dark brown and crispy on the outside like an apple fritter is supposed to be. They are drizzled in copious amounts of sugary glaze, they're soft and gooey on the inside, and they weigh about a pound. The only thing that exceeds their crispy/appley/sugary/gooey goodness is their blueberry fritters. I live nearly 300 miles away, and there have been early weekend mornings when I've seriously considered road-tripping to the Donut House just to get my hands on a decent fritter. I imagine their other pastries are superior as well, but can't say from personal experience. Finding out would mean rejecting a wonder-fritter in favor of...
