Mojito's Mexican Restaurant — Restaurant in Ankeny

They were great when they first opened but have really went downhill fast. The food has been fine, pretty average. The service used to be really great. They strived to take care of guests. Our last three visits were not up to par with several mishaps occurring. The wait staff aren't particularly friendly or attentive. On our most recent visit there were multiple gnats in one margarita. Our server didn't get our daughters choice of side correct even though we explained it once, she seemed to not be listening, so we explained it again, and she still seemed to be zoning out. She wasn't attentive in checking in with us. Every time we needed something simple like boxes we sat waiting a long time. At the end we never received a check. We had to go to the front and they told us the total without being able to see that the itemized charges were correct. I didn't want to be charged for the order mistake that they made. What a sloppy lazy experience. The last time we came in we were sat at a dirty booth that had sticky soda spilled all over the floor underneath it. Pretty average Mexican, ok service, nothing special. My wife and I had dinner here and it was kind of underwhelming.

The place is kinda small, wouldn't be a good choice for larger groups I think, but otherwise it's nice instead. Menu is pretty much normal, all the classics, house specials, cocktails and so on, nothing surprising. Prices are what you'd expect for casual sit-down Mexican.

The food was ok. Chips were nothing special, salsa was good, queso was good (little pricey though). The Pina colada was very good, margarita was ok. I had the Burrito California which was ok. The sauce had an odd tangy flavor I wasn't a fan of and the steak was a little dry. Wife had the chimichanga, the carnitas inside we're very good but otherwise only ok.

Service wasn't the best, not terrible by any means, but a little inconsistent like they were still learning or something. To be fair, they were having issues outside their control with the heat, so they may have been frazzled that night.

Overall ok, but I think there are better options in Ankeny and...

I've been so anxious to try this place and I'm so happy we made it there tonight! They have a large menu so there's something for everyone! Even those kids who are picky eaters and only want mac'n'cheese or a hamburger... So they can go and be happy while you indulge in those amazing margaritas and other Mexican favorites!! We got the chicken chimichaga (one shredded chicken and one grilled chicken) the kids chicken enchilada and El Pastor tacos. Everything was seasoned and so amazing! The El pastor tacos were a little saltier than I'd prefer but still delicious none the less! AND we have so much leftover! It took a while to get our drinks at first and a little longer than my kids were wanting sit still to get our check at the end BUT there was only 1 server and you could see they were taking extra measures to sanitize everything, which is much appreciated during this whole pandemic.
