Ok, so I gotta rant... I hate ranting. But sometimes it's necessary! I don't like being lied to! Or "misinformed." OOka a sushi bistro near my apartment building. Yummy I love sushi! It was delicious but well? Over priced in several ways. Fist of all, that was a half roll not a whole roll! Just because you cut in in 8 tiny pieces does not make it a full roll. Second of all, lady informed me at the door that their prices on menu have changed. Adding an extra 15%. That's fine. I get it, times are tough and prices are going up for food everywhere. We cool. I enjoyed my "half a $9.99 +15% dragon roll" and add a $4.99+15% vanilla ice cream tempura. And I get the bill... what, wait? Ummmm? I know how to do math. My bill should have said $11.50 for dragon roll (or at least the half I got) and $5.75 for ice cream tempura. But alas, my bill clearly states $12.95 for the half or whole dragon roll, and $5.99 for the dessert. Ok.. not a huge difference but it's not 15% extra! It's 30% extra on the dinner 20% on the dessert Either they are incapable of doing math, or they are liars. Either way I don't like liars and I worry about a business that can't do simple math! Especially when the math is in their favor and bites the customers! If you wanna charge an extra 20%-30% THATS COMPLETELY FINE! JUST DONT LIE TO ME, AND SAY ITS 15% WHEN ITS NOT! Also don't try to convince me that a half roll is a full roll. Your really not being honest ya know? You are lying to customers and it's just not cool! Period! It was tasty, even if the dragon roll was warm. I thought that was a tad weird. Never had warm dragon roll before usually it's chilled. But it was seriously hot in that restaurant. Do you not, have air conditioning? it was so humid outside today . You could have turned the air on. I was sweating inside. Dripping sweating . You know how I know? My blue hair dye dripped onto my dress and arm ..ewe. You wanna charge 30% more than your menu states, fine! Go ahead and do it, just don't lie to customers about it! Yeah this is going on yelp. Cause it's pure dishonesty. 15% of $10 is $1.50 not $3 And 15% of $5 is $0.75 not $1 my bill should have said $17.19 +tax not $20.29 so I lied to the woman who lied to me I told her I gave her 20% tip but only gave her 10% tip.. see how much of a difference percentages make, now? Don't like it when it happens to you, do you? Btw don't hover over your customers watching them eat, I know you are bored with only 5 customers in the entire restaurant. You were diligently waiting to take dishes and ask if we wanted anything? But dang girl we don't like being watched or studied so closely while we eat. And can you at least wait until we swallow our food before you approach us? gesh! every single time you approached, I literally had just put food in my mouth. And since you were making a study of me... you knew it! Wipe tables down, go sweep the kitchen, turn the air conditioner on.. do something, besides watch your customers every single move while standing 3 feet away from them gosh! (Wish I took a photo of that scrawny dragon roll) which was a half roll cut into 8 small piece. I see pictures of other people rolls and they were huge! Mine was half the size! even the other customers in the restaurant with me, got bigger rolls twice the size! And in case you were wondering...NO I DID NOT YELL AT WAITRESS, I POLITELY TOLD HER THAT HER, THAT HER MATH WAS OFF. and as a result so was my tip! Told her 20% but only gave 10% don't lie to me! Next time and stop hovering over customers and watching them while they eat. It's disconcerting! And don't wait til they just pop a bite then ask them questions or take dishes while they are chewing. I am a polite person I always say please and thank you. But I can't do that, when you wait till I have a mouthful! updated Wee hours of morning woke up with horrible abdominal pains and other issues, yeah not a good idea eating warm sushi. Never had sushi problems with my...

Long version: This is a hidden gem. I've driven past many times on my way to Home Depot and (embarrassingly) dismissed Ooka as just another Asian-buffet type restaurant. It's in a strip complex opposite the Home Depot. What a silly mistake! This place is superb. We took our kids (who can be somewhat picky eaters) and they absolutely devoured everything we ordered. We got some pork gyoza (essentially dumplings) for an appetizer. It was really delicious. Then we got 5 rolls which I forget the names of, but I doubt that you can go wrong. They were excellent quality, beautiful presentation, and very good. (I believe we had the Minnetonka, rainbow, and dragon and another with some numbers as the name. Sorry I can't be more specific. I'll try to update this if I remember. Still, they were all very good!) The restaurant is nice, and the staff very friendly and helpful. This is now my go-to place when I crave Asian food.
Now, a word about snooty New Yorkers trying to review sashimi and sushi like they had and some special authority. The idea that "fresh" fish is what makes it good is simply ignorant. The truth is that most of the fish that is used is aged for varying periods. For example tuna (shiro maguro/Kama/Toro/ o-Toro/Akami/etc), a staple in the trade (though not my favorite) is quite tough when fresh. It is aged up to 15 days to soften the flesh. The key to good sushi and sashimi is proper aging and preparation. How do I know this? I lived in Japan. I've eaten sashimi and sushi hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of times. Enough said? So, the next time you read a review raving about the fresh fish at a Sushi restaurant, you can scoff at it with your new found knowledge.
Last tip: Do try the eel. Call it Unagi if it helps you get over the odd Western hesitance over a name. It is my absolute favorite that I...
Read moreWhen I came into this restaurant, I was very pleased because it looked like a nice place. After scanning through the menu, We ordered the pork belly ramen, steak and shrimp hibachi special, and no. 9 sushi roll to share as a group, but halfway through dinner, something didn't feel right. As a person allergic to peanuts, ordering these items didn't cause me any alarm, especially since I didn't see any peanuts within the descriptions. I scanned through the items we ordered because I felt like I was having an allergic reaction. I realized that the pork belly ramen had a distinct smell I was familiar to, and immediately tried to flag down our waitress and ask. When we finally got her attention and asked her, she didn't even know what the soup contained. After asking, who I assumed was a manager, she came back to confirm there was peanuts. Because I am not severely allergic, we did not want to create a scene, so we just suggested to, who I again assume is, the manager that they put in the menu allergy warnings. This man's defense was "well, if I'm allergic to something, I will ask the waiter/waitress if there is my allergy in the food." Basically, he said he shouldn't have to put everything that is an allergy hazard on the menu, and to just ask. My waitress didn't even know if my soup had any peanuts. We tried to be friendly and suggest that they need to be more careful since I am not severely allergic. His response was the same every time. It got to a point where he was just repeating what he said. After arguing with my mother for a while, he turns to me and says, in what seemed to be a demeaning way, "are you okay? Do you need to go to the hospital??" At that point I just wanted to get the check and leave. After asking for the check, he continued to defend himself and blame me for not asking first. After the second or third time asking, we finally got our check, payed and left. I am truly...
