Our first time dining at Homshuk was a memorable visit. We were greeted warmly at the door, and had a shorter than estimated wait time. They texted us when our table was ready. The dining room is upscale, but casual. With hard floors and hard ceilings, sound reverberates, and thus conversation was noticeably noisy. It is well lit and warm.
Our server, Genesis, was an absolute delight. Gave us a custom guided tour of the menu, pointing out crowd and personal favorites, and helped us make really informed decisions by answering all of our many questions. She was attentive and cheerful the entire evening, and definitely gave us a five star experience.
The crisp and tasty chips come served in a noticeably smaller than average bowl (that contained approximately 20 chips) with some remarkably tasty fresh green salsa. Genesis brought us more, but in the end we were grateful for the smaller than average serving size, because we didn’t fill up on chips. The entrée serving sizes are large.
The entrées came plated beautifully, and were a sight to behold. We ordered pork tacos, the wet burrito, and enchiladas with molé. The flavors were robust, bright, and widely varied — some of the boldest Mexican food you can find this side of the border. The wet burrito (with steak) was a table favorite. The pork tacos were bright and lively.
There were a couple of food issues that were a surprise in a negative way, not enough to dampen the night, but enough for management to know about, so I’ll share them with you: the pork tacos, while exceptionally tasty, were so fatty that half of the volume of meat was left on the plate. (Sorry I didn’t take a picture.) I found a chicken bone in the enchilada meat that was probably an inch and a half long, that was nearly a choking hazard for me. (Please, kitchen staff, be more careful.)
And finally, the molé… I’ve never had a molé quite like this one, and I have enjoyed molé all across Oaxaca, Mexico (famous for its molé). By far the boldest tasting molé i’ve ever had… Unfortunately, (and this breaks my heart to write) it was not to my liking. Make sure that you ask for its flavor profile before you order. I would describe it as an exceptionally strong unsweetened dark chocolate flavor with hints of coffee, sesame, and barbecue sauce. The cacao was so strong it was almost daring you to like it. If they dialed that back, then I believe you would be left with the exceptionally complex and wonderful experience that molé could provide. Then again, taste is subjective, and you might love it. I was the only one at the table who found it edible Maybe ask for a sample before ordering.
For the quality and care put into the food, and the level of service, everything is reasonably priced. Our party of three spent $70 (after tip), and ordered one drink. There was a mysterious 3% surcharge on the bill that the menu said was related to some mysterious Minnesota statute. (I hate surcharges that are not explained.)
With the other two entrées and the chips, we could see that this place has some of the boldest, tastiest, Mexican food in the Twin Cities. Will definitely be back, and I expect with our next visit, be able to raise this to a five star rating (barring excess fat and...
Read moreI usually don’t write reviews but this is this best Mexican food I’ve ever had in my life.
I accidentally stumbled across this restaurant. It was snowing and I was hungry and didn’t want to drive far. I was across the street at BMO and HAD TO turn right one the one way.
I had no idea what kind of restaurant this was but I thought the grocery store next door was Korean. Bodega 42 and Homshuk are not traditionally Mexican or Spanish names I recognize. To be honest if I knew it was Mexican food i would have passed on it because I didn’t wasn’t in the mood for Mexican food.
As I walked in I realized it was a Mexican restaurant and I looked over the menu it was pretty standard.
I ordered shrimp appetizer and pork belly tacos. I usually don’t eat pork but I ordered it because originally I thought the grocery store next door was Korean and I wanted Korean food but settled for Mexican.
The food came out and I took one bite of the shrimp and the flavors hit my taste buds with memories of my trip to Mexico.
I am a cook so I could tell the ingredients were quality and the details were well thought of. I could tell the shrimp had been marinated in lime before being grilled over an open fire.
Then I took a bite out of my pork belly tacos. Personally I was surprised the tacos didn’t come with a side of salsa verde or rojo. I’ve never had pork belly tacos before but the combination of the savory and sweet pork with the fresh pickled red onions just took me to heaven. It everything was perfection. No need for hot sauce.
I was surprised the tacos came with Mexican rice and beans. I also don’t like refried beans and usually order Mexican food without it because beans are usually flavorless filler food. But this refried bean was so good I ate all of it. It was rich with pork fat? And also a hint of spicy, jalapeño mixed in there?
I literally cried as I was eating this food because it was so delicious. I also loved the Bachata music playing. Great atmosphere. I went on a Friday at 2pm so there was a few people.
I noticed that they have garage doors that open. Seems like a fun time when the weather gets warmer.
I will definitely be back with all my friends and family. I enjoyed myself thoroughly and feel blessed to stumble across this gem.
I can’t wait to try their $2 taco Tuesdays!
I really appreciate every quality detail in the food, the music and the atmosphere.
My usual favorite Mexican/Latino food in the south metro is Los Grandes in Burnsville (my Mexican boyfriend and I would eat there twice a week) or El Sazon in Eagan. Que Taco in Savage.
I did check out the grocery store next door and I’m excited they have ready to made food as well. I love the selection of ready made salsa and cakes!
I also included some photos but apologies I didn’t think I was going to be sharing them on here. I was just sending my friend what I ate for lunch.
My only criticism was that I was by myself and wonder if that was the reason I didn’t get some free chips and salsa? I did see another woman who got some but I didn’t know if...
Read moreThis restaurant is new but looked like a wonderful new Mexican restaurant so we had to go check it out... And we were not disappointed!
The menu has a good variety of choices for dishes and options to customize.... from the appetizers to tacos to main courses to the tequila and mezcal selections.
We started with the adobo pollo nachos and chorizo queso dip with chips and salsa. The different salsa options were really fresh and tasty and paired nice with the chorizo queso. But the adobo pollo (chicken) was REALLY tasty on top of the nachos.
We ordered chicken enchiladas and birria tacos for the main courses. The birria tacos outshined the chicken enchiladas. Although the chicken was extremely juicy, the flavor was lacking compared to everything else we had tasted during our experience.
We each settled on the Spicy Pineapple Margarita to enjoy during our stay... We subbed in the Teremana tequila (started by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson!) and the drink was super smooth with potent flavor.
And this is where I get to talk about the service we received. From the hostess/host stand in front, to our server Kate, and especially the manager Guillermo.... simply superb! Kate handled our questions about the menu and order skillfully and with a neverending smile on her face. But once we met Guillermo, our experience truly became a 5-star standout. He was so personable; so knowledgeable; had excellent recommendations; was funny; and he was effortlessly able to juggle multiple tasks as they were thrown at him from other servers/bartenders/customers. He's a gem and the reason why we will be back again soon for more!
This place is definitely worth a stop to allow Guillermo and his crew wow you with their service and their tasty creations anytime you are...
