"When you're ready, come & get it. Na na na na, na na na na." - "Come & Get It", Selena Gomez
Increasing the size of my ample Bombay booty, one bite at a time w/ the lunch buffet at Ashoka the Great.
Ashoka, the Indian emperor who converted & spread Buddhism throughout the vast terrain of India after the destruction of Kalinga, would be proud of the lunch buffet at the restaurant that shares his namesake.
Here's why I prefer Ashoka's lunch buffet over The India Restaurant's- -more expansive choices -more dining room -lower cost
For only $8.95, Indian food lovers can choose whatever catches their fancy- Quick! Someone call 911! I'm about to commit murder on the buffet ;P A basket of garlic naan greeted me as I was about to commit foodicide- Buttery soft, warm & chewy. Perfect vehicle to sop up all the sauces. This alone is worth the buffet price.
Plate 1 (Tandoori chicken, goat curry, saag paneer, aloo bengal)- The tandoori chicken was moist & tender, the goat was succulent & the saag paneer was absolutely delightful
Plate 2 (Forgot to take a pic, but had daal, paneer curry, chaat, a samosa etc)
Plate 3 (More Tandoori chicken, goat curry & saag paneer)-
Dessert plate 1 (Gajar halwa, ghulab jamun, lentil dessert, mangos w/cream, assorted fruits)- Gajar halwa wasn't too sweet, the ghulab jamun was fluffy & soft, the lentil dessert reminded me of the stuffing inside hopia monggo & the mangos w/cream were frozen deliciousness.
Dessert plate 2 (Mostly the same but w/ rice pudding & grapes)- The rice pudding was cold & refreshing. The grapes were sweet.
I now look like a full-term pregnant woman, ready to go into labor any day now.
Lots of seating, with rows of tables in the middle w/ booths at the perimeter of this rectangular shaped restaurant. My white cloth napkin became all shades of colors after wiping my grubby paws on them while finishing up the food carnage.
In between bites, I watched TV on Ashoka's two flatscreens. One had a cricket game one & the other displayed Indian music videos. Entertaining, to say the least.
Street parking is available in front for $1.50/hr, w/ a 3 hr max. I just parked down a ways by Guppy Teahouse & had a leisurely stroll to the restaurant.
Highly recommend the lunch buffet at Ashoka the Great. A vast array of food choices are available, all at the low price of $8.95. You can't beat that w/ a wiffle ball bat.
Now, if you'll excuse me. I'm going to put on some elastic shorts & start up my Zumba DVD. I have to burn the trillion calories I just ate in order to be bikini ready for summer...

Read moreThe food was fine, not the best or worst Indian I've had but it was some of the slowest and least efficient service I've had in a restaurant in general. First our server forgot to put our order in and apologized and offered a discount and that would have been fine if that was all, people make mistakes and they were pretty busy. I'm trying to figure out if we was the only server and also covering inside or what because before that he was slow and after that he was still slow and when our food did finally come he took forever to check on us. The weirdest thing was that other people checked on us and asked us if we needed things, which we did, but they never brought us the things we needed after they asked so maybe they were just going and telling our server to get us what we were missing? For example, they forgot the rice and the person who brought us our food offered to get it for us but never did. Another man asked us if we needed anything when we were done and sitting for a while and we asked for boxes to take food home. That guy didn't bring us boxes but a good ten minutes later our server showed up and asked us if we needed boxes. He then counted that we would need three and returned with only two. I get a restaurant being busy but I felt like I was constantly waiting for service even when our server was outside where we could see him and talking to other customers. The people to our right were in the same boat and kept flagging him down to ask for things.
Maybe it was an off day, maybe just that one server sucks but I do know that there are an insane number of Indian restaurants on this street and unless somebody twisted my arm I think this experience has made it so that I would visit literally all of them before going here again and giving them...
