My family has been eating at the Monterrey House since the early 1980s. I was therefore raised on this food. I loved it from an early age, and I can honestly say that I developed my love for spicy food by eating here every other week or so with my parents and my grandparents. I have many wonderful memories of eating at the Monterrey House with my family, and I hope to make many more.
Many years ago, the original family that owned and operated the Monterrey House decided to leave the restaurant business, and they sold the restaurant to a new family. I will admit that we were terrified that the food would change for the worse. However, the new family knew that changing anything would be a disaster, so they left it all the same. Nothing changed. Absolutely nothing. It was a gift from above.
Now that you know my history with this place, you're probably thinking that I'm just biased in favor of their food because of my family's love of it. You would be wrong. This place has some seriously legitimate and delicious cuisine. It's authentic, and the menu is simple.
My personal favorite: the classic smothered burrito. The green chile with pork is to DIE for. The pork falls apart upon contact with your fork. You feel the spice, and it's warm and wonderful. What more could you ask for? Also, I love the chile con queso (served tostada-style with hot peppers and melty cheese). I have never been anywhere else that serves it the way they do, and trust me, it is unique, spicy, and freakin' delicious.
The prices are EXTREMELY reasonable. You can get a giant meal for under $10 (and I'm talking GIANT). The restaurant's interior needs a little updating, but that's not why you go there, and that's not why there is always a steady stream of people eating at this quaint place in the quiet town of Arvada.
Don't listen to Justin R's review. He obviously didn't eat at the Monterrey House, and, if he did, he quite literally got it all wrong. Trust me on this one. Try it for yourself. I hope it stays open for a long time, because I will be eating there with my family until the...
Read moreI started going to the Monterrey House in Edgewater around the 1960's. Jerry who's family owned the restaurant about 6 or 7 years ago sold the store in Arvada to family members. In the beginning there was a Monterrey house in downtown Denver along with the one in Edgewater . The one downtown was on Larimer and the one in Edgewater was on 20th. The closed the on downtown and worked the one on 20th. Sometime in I believe the 70's they moved to Wadworth north of 6th ave. Then they sold that and moved to Ralston road where they are to this day. I believe it was Jerry's sister who help him run the place.( She worked the hardest) There was also another sister or cousin that worked in the kitchen on 20th and who waited table on Ralston Road. When they sold I think the family moved back to Mexico. The food at the Monterrey now is good but is not quite the same as when Jerry's family owned it.(adding new things to the menu) The Monterrey House in Texas what has changed it's name was at one time owned by Jerry's uncle. The restaurant on 20th started as a drive inn that was popular with the teenagers of the area in the late 50's. Called Gene and Pats. The Chili con queso was out of this world, along with the burrito with chili verde inside was to die for. I moved from the denver area in 1975 but when I could I would go there and eat when I was in town. I even traveled from Houston just to see family and eat at the Monterrey House. in...
Read moreChecked this place out for the first time on a recommendation. The food is good, not spectacular, but really good. What I liked about the place is the service. Pretty sure it is family owned and the whole family works there. We had chips and salsa at our table before we were even settled in. Good homemade salsa too. Wife and I ordered margaritas which were really good. I had the Monterey House plate, which has a bit of everything and a lot of it. This has been one of the few times where I could not finish everything, of course it came out on two plates, so it was a lot of food. Wife had the small combination meal, and it too came out on two plates. Seriously, you get a good amount of food. After we had ordered, we had our first plates within 5 minutes. Service is quick!! Their green chili is a bit too watery for me, but still has good flavor. Maybe ask for it on the side. Overall, I do like this place and would go back. It’s a hole in the wall restaurant that you would miss driving by, but the service is better than some fancy places I’ve been to. All tables were taken by time we left and a couple was waiting to snag our spot. They’ve been around for a while. I know why, good food, lots of it, and great service. I’m gonna go back and try a burrito next time, and another...
