Want to feel discriminated against due to the way you're dressed? This is where to go! Not kidding. My husband and I are on the last night of our anniversary vacation and really wanted Italian for dinner so we selected Fulio's. We arrived dressed in jeans and t-shirts, as thats what we had been exploring the area in all day. Apparently that's not up to the waitress/hostesses standards. She ignored us as we walked in and we were seated by the chef, who also served us our meal (which was great) and was very nice to us. After being seated the waitress ignored us over neighboring tables of well dressed patrons in their 60's. We actually sat with empty beer and wine glasses for 15 minutes before my husband called out to the waitress who was refilling another table for the third time since we had been there. Once our meal was done we were immediately brought our bill, I actually wanted another glass or two of wine but apparently that wouldn't be happening. As we left there were a couple of other tables that were there when we arrived, still happily sipping wine and chatting while being heavily waited on by the waitress. This was a sad experience of discrimination based on the way we were dressed and assumed financial position. I would have reviewed this as a 1 star if not for the fact that chef and the food he made. The food is amazing but the waitress needs to realize that Astoria is a tourist town and not all of your customers are going to dress up to have dinner. Jeans and a t-shirt doesn't mean that you aren't going to get a good tip, but treating people like they are below you will. Before we left another couple came in, similar to us and were receiving the same treatment. (Side note, jeans and t-shirts we were wearing are new, clean and nice. Although I shouldn't have, I didn't skimp on the tip but it would have been a lot better had the waitress treated us properly. Most other patrons were dressed more in a business...
Read moreG&R commentary: About us: “G&R” goes for “Gentz & Raya” - we are 2 cooks and adventures who have been traveling the world for over 20 years, and in the last 5 years recently started rating restaurants as we realized we have tasted so many flavors across the world that it’s time to share our culinary expertises and experiences with those who try avoid disappointments and want an accurate and honest review based on experience and knowledge :) this commentary is mostly from Raisa :) : this is our second visit and unfortunately we confirmed that flavours are lacking … so cannot push it to 4 stars - pasta was very greasy and plain - plain could be good when it is well balanced with simple ingredients which was not the case. I tried two varieties of chicken dish - not impressed especially for a price, I actually think that some of the Italian chain restaurants have bit better flavour for same type dish. house white trio (cheapest option for three house white wines) was Okey compared to same basic option in red. At first visit however we had exceptional customer service which is why we waited to review this location - last visit was simply pitiful experience because I arrived with my dear mother and daughter and a friend to celebrate something special but the waitress was indifferent almost acted annoyed or prideful - happily the passing waitress at least asked what was the reason of celebration - I would recommend management to maybe see what up with a spirit of their staff and cheer them up and maybe same with cooks - I think this restaurant has seen better days and still has great potential but nowadays people know their food bit better so it’s time to bring the game up and we will be happy to assist with recommendations or review again. We love Italian food and very often visit Italy for that reason so really hope see this restaurant to make...
Read moreOverall, a below average experience. Read all the reviews and thought this would be a good choice for a simple pasta dinner with the family. We walked away disappointed. Wasnt the worst experience, just fell far short of what we hoped for.
Called ahead to make sure we could get in. When we arrived there was nobody there to greet us. When someone did come, we were seated promptly but told our food might be slow in coming because of two large parties in back.
The service was ok, but not outstanding. I'm sure that the staff was stretched thin because of the larger parties.
in what was an odd start to the meal, we found we had to stir the oil that came with the bread as it was flavorless. Once we stirred it we could taste the balsamic vinaigrette.
We each had a pasta dish. None of the four were met with any excitement by our party. Overall, just very bland -- I expected to enjoy some flavors of herbs or spices but detected none. Portions were appropriate with the price, but nobody at our table finished their dish. The Alfredo dish was odd ... just barely warm enough, a little al dente, and a slightly odd flavor. Two other people at the table tasted it and remarked that it just didn't seem right.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend what we had. Perhaps the other dishes are better. Its a nice setting in an interesting and well-designed space, and I really wanted to like it. But I didnt, and I didn't like feel like I had an $80 experience. The food was the main reason for the...
