My friends and I visited Ghee for dinner and, unfortunately, had a disappointing experience overall.
Tasting menu rules: I’m a vegetarian while my friends are not, so when we were told about the tasting menu, I asked whether a vegetarian version was available. I was informed that the restaurant would only offer a vegetarian tasting menu if the entire table ordered it, and at the same price as the regular version. This policy seemed unnecessarily rigid and confusing, especially since we were told that while we couldn’t mix tasting menus, we could still order à la carte meat dishes. In the end, my friends (being the considerate sweethearts they are) agreed to do the vegetarian tasting menu so that we could all enjoy the same experience.
Portion sizes: We were also puzzled by how Ghee determines tasting menu portions for different party sizes. As a table of four, our portions often felt oddly small for sharing. For instance, dessert included one small piece of sticky date cake and a single small scoop of ice cream to split among four people. It made us wonder whether a solo diner would receive the same portion, if so, it hardly seemed equitable.
Taste and quality: Half of our group was Indian and half non-Indian, and all of us found the food lacking. The dishes didn’t taste authentically Indian, in fact, several leaned more toward Thai-style flavors (papaya salad, coconut vegetable curry). The Indians in our group were especially disappointed, and even our non-Indian friends found the flavors underwhelming and confusing. Additionally, the a la carte lamb neck dish was sold to us as an outstanding dish. However it ending up being not as good as it was hyped up to be. It tasted like regular sweet American barbecue, again with no detectable or standout Indian flavors.
Service: Service was slow and disorganized. There were several staff members standing idle near the kitchen on several occasions. We had to repeatedly flag someone down to ask for our next course, as we had another appointment afterward.
Price point: Given the confusingly rigid tasting menu rules, small portions, uneven and inauthentic flavors, and overall lackluster service, the meal felt significantly overpriced and not worth the cost.
Redeemable qualities: The cocktails were the one bright spot of the evening.
Overall, we left feeling disappointed and underwhelmed. Unfortunately, we will not return to Ghee or recommend...
Read moreThis was one of the most disappointing meals I've had in recent memory. I came in with very high expectations after seeing a ton of buzz around the Wynwood location. Needless to say, I won't be returning. Here's the breakdown:
I got a last minute 9pm reservation for a party of 2, and the place was packed. Even though our table was available, we had to wait and were seated around 9:15. We placed our food order around 9:20 and didn't get our first bite of food until 9:45.
We ordered Mushroom Momos (dumplings), Tandoori Chicken, Kerala Lamb, Saag Paneer, garlic naan, and dessert.
Mushroom momos were a strong start to the meal, with a really decadent creamy sauce and perfectly cooked dumplings. But it was all downhill from there.
Had high hopes for the $28 tandoori chicken dish, which ended up being 3 small pieces of grilled chicken thigh, lightly seasoned and lacking on flavor. Much worse than tandoori chicken you could make at home. Total rip off.
The Kerala Lamb is a South Indian coconut-based lamb curry. The lamb was high quality and cooked well, but the curry itself was mediocre at best. It didn't have the depth of flavor or well-developed texture that you would expect from a high-end curry. Bland and watery with whole stewed tomatoes, barely caramelized onions, and a dash of spice.
We ordered Saag Paneer, but they "ran out" and gave us paneer jalfrezi instead (which we did not want). It was the worst of the main dishes we had. Again, high quality paneer but the curry itself was almost inedible. Would not recommend.
Garlic naan was basically seeded pita bread. Disgrace to the word "naan" and had literally zero garlic. It was closer to the "naan" you buy at Costco than actual naan out of a tandoor.
Dessert was the saving grace. We had the sticky date cake, which tasted like a combo of sticky toffee pudding and gulab jamun. One of the best Indian desserts I've had.
All in all, this was not a great dining experience and I was really disappointed by the food. Maybe I got the wrong things, or maybe I went too late at night. There are better Indian restaurants in Atlanta to try. Even the basic ones like Blue India or Tabla are much...
Read moreI will start by saying that the service and the atmosphere were highlights of the meal. Everyone we interacted with was professional and courteous and food and drinks were delivered in reasonable amounts of time. As many others have reviewed so far, the food itself left much to be desired in terms of flavor and spices. My husband and I eat Indian food regularly so we had a standard in mind coming into the meal especially knowing comparable restaurants in Atlanta at this price point. This did not come close to the other options. We started with Mo-garitas which had a nice addition of mango to a traditional margarita. The farm patra was batter-forward but the chutney that came with it added some interesting flavor. The charred corn was good, but nothing special. You can’t really tell there’s paneer in it and mostly it just tasted like grilled corn. The vegetable kofta was my favorite dish of the evening in particular the kofta themselves were nicely fried and the inside were fluffy. The cashew curry was good, but again nothing stand out. The channa masala was very disappointing as this is usually our go-to dish. The chickpeas were not tender and the curry was under spiced. The ghost pepper naan was indulgent and I enjoyed it but it didn’t really complement any of the other dishes we ordered making it sort of a side dish. For dessert, we ordered the chai ice cream sandwiches which held together well and the biscuits kept their crunch. We were offered a sticky date cake that was delivered by mistake and that dish ended up being the real stand out of the whole meal. I really hope that things turn around for this location because we, along with many, were really looking forward to having Ghee come to Atlanta. At this point, I don’t think I’d be able to recommend Ghee to others based on the food quality being offered at this...
