I don’t think I’ve ever written such a detailed review but this place has me floored 😂
I was really excited to try this place out! It looked very cute and actually has breakfast sandwiches. After getting breakfast here I cannot help but write about how disorganized this place is. First off it is VERY cute and the treats look delicious.
Just really stunned by the complete lack of organization here. It’s easy to not see it because it’s cute. But man, no trash can?
The first thing that was awkward was that their menu was only on letter port printouts at the end of their pastry windows. They didn’t have one at the register or above or anywhere to reference. So I had to carry it with me. Then there was no where to put it afterwards.
Second, there is no trash or place to bud your own dishes. So there’s piles of paper ware everywhere from people who have left it there. The nearest trash can IS OUTSIDE and it’s overflowing!!!!
Third, you order food and they bring it out to you on plates but everything else is disposable. Wooden forks wrapper in paper. Coffee served in paper cups. The worst part about this is that you can’t tell what utensils you’re getting. I tried to get a fork only to find a wooden knife three times. After which I had to ask someone food running to get me one. A waste of his time. It’s confusing weird and wasteful. Why not use real cups and real silverware?
Fourth, you order a coffee. And there is a sugar station but in order to get cream you need to interrupt the cashier who is working and ask for cream. They’ll give you a cup full of cream. Then you’ll pour your small amount then give it back. They have to pour out the rest and throw away the paper.
On food running, there’s a bunch of staff running food back and fourth. When you order they rice you a small number It’s easily not seen so the food runners are awkwardly pacing back and forth until they find you. Poor fellas. Make it easier for everyone by using bigger signs or just calling it out.
It’s really expensive for what it is. I got a coffee, breakfast sandwich and latkes for $30.
Another thing they bummed me out was when I ordered my sandwich I asked how the egg is prepared. I was told sunnyside up but can be cooler to order. So I asked for over hard. Got it sunny side up. That’s entirely on me though. I should know to never...
Read moreWent to Star Provisions for lunch on my birthday, having been a longtime fan of Anne Quatrano's various culinary enterprises, for decades. We arrived after their normal lunch service had ended, so we ordered something to go. Unfortunately, it seems, Ms Quatrano has lost her desire to provide the level of exemplary service typical of the calibre her reputation was once built upon.
I ordered a Shrimp Po Boy (To Go), and when I got home (literally a block and a half away), my sandwich was still warm, however the shrimp were WAY overcooked. I decided to write an email to the restaurant's email address because $14 is a lot of money to pay for any sandwich, much less, one that is distinctly faulty.
I was quite surprised to receive a reply by Ms Quatrano, herself. I was even more surprised at the tone and condescension in her reply. She seemed convinced I'd microwaved my sandwich, causing the shrimp to be overcooked. Knowing better, I hadn't. And even stated as much in my email.
Maybe Ms Quatrano was having a bad day, or my email arrived at a particularly stressful moment. The food service business can be very stressful. I had actually written my email for two specific reasons; first, as a previous restaurant owner/operator, I learned to appreciate when a customer raises an objective concern about the product or service upon which I've built a reputation. For every ten bad experiences, you're lucky if even one will let the operator know. Most people just forget about it and move along.
Second, everyone makes mistakes, and a $14 mistake—I would think—is enough to precipitate some kind of remedy or offer to "make things right," so to speak. An offer to replace the sandwich or a gift certificate—something that shows an effort to make things right.
Ms Quatrano offered neither. And frankly, I got the distinct impression from her reply that it was my fault, somehow, the shrimp was overcooked and inedible.
It is at this point that I generally accept the fact I'm dealing with a dead end, and shouldn't waste my time further. I'm leaving this review so other customers, or potential customers,...
Read moreWe wanted a spot to post up while we did a little work and also grab a bite to eat at the same time. Our research led us to Star Provisions. It was our first time so we were excited to try it, especially since it smelled so good when you walked in. We ordered the granola and yogurt bowl, a chicken biscuit, and the Korean beef sandwich. The granola and yogurt bowl was nice, not too sweet, and the chicken biscuit was really good. My husband liked his sandwich but said the bread was almost too chewy and wished it had a bit more flavor, but he enjoyed it. Overall, we would definitely try the food again. The sore part of our experience was the customer service at the front counter. There were two employees working the front counter at the time of our visit. The guy seemed really quiet but made sure to greet us and answer our questions at least. However, the young woman did not greet us and seemed short and not very warm. As a woman, I never assume another woman has to do a show and dance of “politeness” to make others feel comfortable, but this is the hospitality industry. Being hospitable should be the bare minimum. My husband even went back to order something else with his coffee and asked if she had recommendations for pastries. She responded with a shrug, “I mean, it’s whatever you like.” She didn’t bother asking any questions about his preference or try to suggest something. You work at a bakery. Someone asking you for recommendations is not outlandish. He ended up just getting his coffee and leaving it at that. Didn’t want to spend anymore money. It just seemed we were not the type of customers she felt she needed provide above and beyond service to. The rest of the staff were nice, specifically the person who was going around delivering the food to each table. They were wearing a baseball cap. Based on the reviews it’s obvious Star Provisions is a local favorite and customers rave about the service. It was just not our experience. This was January 23rd, 2024...
