I've been waiting for Ton Ton to open for about a year, and I was so excited to get to visit on opening night! We arrived around 5pm, and the joint had only a few other patrons at the time, but a few more trickled in during our stay. There isn't a sign on the front of the restaurant yet, which might have led to fewer people realizing it was open, but it is, and you should go! (In fact, I already have plans to visit this coming Friday, and I'm bringing friends!)
The food: 5 stars. I'm a ramen addict, and while I'll try ramen from anywhere, I do have standards. Chef Guy Wong is someone who has consistently met those standards at his restaurant Miso Izakaya, which is why I was so excited for him to open Ton Ton, which is dedicated to ramen. My husband and I tried the shoyu (the ginger is light, but noticeable, especially in the char siu), and the dan dan ramen (my favorite, which is saying something because there is no broth, and it's quite spicy). The menu also includes a tonkatsu ramen and yasai ramen, both of which I'm sure will be good options for next time.
Because ramen usually fills up our stomachs, we didn't try any of the smaller plates of yakitori or gyoza, but I bet they're delicious, and I hope to try some when I visit again this week.
They don't have their liquor license yet (7/1/2016), but Ton Ton has many tasty artisan sodas and iced teas in the meantime! I tried the coconut green tea, which is light, sweet, and refreshing. My husband got the Maine made root beer, which was also yummy.
The atmosphere is fairly plain at this time (4 stars), which I supposed leaves room for the food to take the spotlight. I'm not sure if they have plans to decorate more, but I would recommend rearranging at least some of the tables and chairs. I was seated at the corner you turn to enter the restaurant, and the aisle was too tight for comfort. My chair got bumped a couple times, and the bumping increased as more guests arrived to the small dining room.
All in all, as far as I'm concerned, this is THE ramen destination in ITP Atlanta right now. It's head and shoulders above Raku, and open for ramen more often than Octopus Bar (which is the only ramen that holds a candle to Ton Ton). I have one other Japanese restaurant that I'll keep on my ramen list, Ginya Izakaya in Westside, which has free parking and more non-ramen variety, but the way Ton Ton focuses almost solely on ramen means that they do ramen REALLY well. Read moreTonight was a very unprofessional night for me and my girlfriend and our friends. We have been coming to this specific restaurant for about 2 years now and never had any issues until tonight. To start things off, a manager by the name of Jasmine spoke with us at the entrance before we walked inside. She told us that she knows me and my girlfriend are a regular but we do not tip and the servers were reluctant to serve us because of that. Me and my girlfriend always tip at this specific restaurant unless the server was bad. We know most of the servers by their name and have not had any issues with them. So the manager (Jasmine) then tells us we can still dine or to just get our food to go. We decided to still dine in. Once seated, Jasmine and another female employee began staring at us as we ate. At one point they pointed us out to another employee. Once we were done eating. We tipped our server $30 because he was good and professional to us. We then walked over to the female employee who was with Jasmine (the manager) to discuss why she had been staring at us and pointing at us. She responded by saying she didn't stare at us and it was us staring at her. Then the manager (Jasmine) intervened and said that yes they were talking about us. We told her it was unprofessional and she said that she was very professional. One of our friends that was with us said she shouldnt of been doing that because it made us uncomfortable. Jasmine then stated to our friend that she was irrelevant and that she wasn't talking to her. So my girlfriend asked for the general managers name and number. She wrote it down and gave us the paper. As we were leaving she told the female employee "I'm not worried about them hoes ". So we stopped and asked her why she said what she said. She then proceeded to curse and get loud with us and threatened to call security. None of us raised our voice as loud as she did. She was very unprofessional and I will be back up there to speak with the manager. If anyone has the owners phone number I would greatly...
Read moreI had dinner with my family here last night and unfortunately was left with a bad taste in my mouth due to the service. Our waitress’ name was Libby and everything was great until it was time to pay for the checks. Upon signing for my check, she immediately changed her pleasant persona into a cold, rude, and downright disrespectful one. And we’re still not sure why because although the tip was custom, it would still be considered a “good tip”. Anyway, upon realizing that I was customizing the tip, all of a sudden she stopped acknowledging us, rolled her eyes when I asked for a bag to carry my hot ramen noodles home in, and when I thanked her for bringing the bag she still didn’t acknowledge that I said anything to her and abruptly walked away leaving me and my party stunned at the level of blatant disrespect. My family members that were sitting with me assumed that it was because I elected to do a custom tip as opposed to the suggested tips since the change was so sudden. And to make matters worse, I spoke with the manager (I believe her name was Jenny) and I could tell she wasn’t taking my complaint serious because she was smiling and giggling the whole time I was telling her about the mistreatment from her employee. Needless to say, I won’t be back. Libby and Jenny (?) need some more customer service training. The food was ok but definitely not the best ramen I’ve ever had. Plus the rude staff?? NEVER AGAIN. I’m a regular at Ponce City Market and this was my first time trying Ton Ton. But due to the horrible experience, I’ll be taking my money elsewhere. Suggestion: On a good note, we discovered Umbrella Bar (a new PCM restaurant/bar) today and the service, food, and staff were SUPERB!!! Go there instead where your money and presence are appreciated no matter the...
