My daughter has been raving about Amsterdam since she’s been living down here for almost 10 years now. Every time I call on a Sunday I ask her how her weekend was and usually has to deal with a meal at Amsterdam. Now I could understand why. for a birthday celebration we came here for dinner, and it was not what I thought it was. I thought it was going to be a stuffy uptight restaurant, and it was a complete opposite. Essentially located in a semi residential area on the edge of campus. Upon walking in you’re in the older section of the restaurant, where we were seated. In back is a very nice dining area and also have an outdoor eating area. , where we were seated. In back is a very nice dining area and also have a outdoor eating area. As an appetizer, we ordered the grilled brussels sprouts and the calamari. The calamari was very good, with a Red sauce that was almost like a sweet-and-sour red sauce. Not your traditional marinara red sauce. It was very good and very tasty. The grilled brussels sprouts were delicious. Brussels sprouts were bedded over a Gorgonzola cheese, I think. I’m not a big cheese person, therefore, I try to avoid the cheese on it, but the brussels sprouts were still very good. As an entrée, I had the shrimp and grits, which was delicious and also had some of my daughter’s chicken mac & cheese. Which was very good. The mac & cheese had collard greens in it. Watch was exceptional. The flavoring was spot on. Another entrée was the salmon with mashed potatoes, which is a gluten-free. The person who had that and truly enjoyed it, and said the same was cooked perfectly. We talked about dessert, but we didn’t see anything that was too interesting, therefore we decided not to get any. Highly suggest reservations on weekends especially on game days and parent evolved weekends. Found parking literally right in front so it was not an issue, but it can’t be an issue I think. There is a lot behind Amsterdam, but it is unknown if you could park there or not no is it posted if you can or not, but there’s a lot of towing signs. If you’re In Auburn and want a Auburn traditional restaurant, highly...
Read moreI ate lunch at this establishment today.I had the daily special hamburger, my daugter had a roast beef sandwich my wife had a salmon topped salad (she has some food allergy issues, likely gluten intolerance).
Quite frankly the food was disgusting. I will never return to this restaurant ever. I had eaten there in the past, in the past this establishment was a better or much better than average place to eat. (I have lived in Auburn for more than 25 yrs) Today the food was just not fit to eat. I am surprised nobody got sick. Yep, it was that nasty.
Most of the lettuce in my wife's salad was black and slimy looking. On top of that, there was a piece of sharp plastic hidden among the greens (not so much green as black). The waiter, once notified, was apologetic and did indeed remove the price of the salad from our bill. However.
I am sorry I allowed my family to eat what the waiter brought once I saw how nasty was. I am glad and I guess sort of lucky I am writing this mean review rather than puking from food poisoning right now.
Whatever sort of cook who allowed that garbage to be served should not be allowed to work as a cook at even the most punative prison in all of the land. It was simply gross.
I made the mistake of ordering french fries with the daily special burger sandwich. The burger seemed OK but the fries were just about as bad as french fries can be. My guess is they were cooked in very old (much used, possibly fried a lot of fish in it??) oil. They were compared to for example five guys fries, just simply not edible. My daughter told me "OH the are just frozen fries, you are too fussy". Yea OK but they tasted like cooked in fish oil.
Yes this is pretty negative, but I think they earned it. And just to rub in the fact of nasty food, I left a 20% tip for the...
Read moreAmsterdam Cafe was on a list of best restaurants in AL, so we wanted to give it a try. Such a cute venue! Looks like a tiny, quaint little cafe but, evidently it goes way back & is actually quite spacious! Menu is somewhat limited, sides are few. Food descriptions are interesting. The Crab Cakes have been listed as one of the 100 top meals to try before you die. Despite description stating croissant, we have never had a crab cake served in a croissant before. Think it would be better served on a lettuce bed, perhaps 2 crab cakes rather than just 1. The salsa & sauce served alongside were delicious, but the crab cake itself does not compare to ones we've enjoyed in WA state or in New England. There was also a honey mustard sauce included which I used on my Chicken, Cheese, & Bacon Sandwich on a Ciabatta Bun as it needed a little extra something. Supposedly a condiment was to be on the bread, but if it was there, I could not find it. We both chose fresh made sweet potato chips which came out greasy & soggy. Some of mine crisped up after awhile, but my husband's never did & remained greasy, leathery, & inedible. I suppose it was my bad for not requesting the bacon on my sandwich be cooked very well done, and not sure if that was the problem, but I made it the 60 mile drive home before I became violently ill. So although the cafe is adorable, service is excellent, it is doubtful we will return. Hopefully it was just an unfortunate day for...
