Umika — Restaurant in Auburn

Having lived in Auburn for a while, I’m confident saying that restaurants like Umika don’t last unless they make significant changes to either the quality of their food and/or the price at which they sell it. My wife and I bought $70 worth of food to try out this new spot and were severely disappointed. Sushi was Kroger quality for 2-3 times the cost, hibachi was soup, and both the flavors and portion sizes left a lot to be desired. After not eating all day, we ended up getting rid of the majority of our meal and cooking something else for dinner because it was just that bad. We don’t plan to go back. Owner, if you’re reading this and want your restaurant to succeed, please sort your reviews by lowest rating and listen to the masses. I really wanted to like this place! The service was great and the staff and owner were really nice and friendly, but the food was very disappointing and significantly overpriced for the quality. I got the steak hibachi and my brother got the ton katsu. The fried rice texture was super weird and did not taste like normal rice, not sure why. My steak was cooked okay, but lacked flavor. The ton katsu had no sauce on it, the “coleslaw” was just lettuce, and the white rice was almost inedible. Sadly, I will not be back. Hoping they can improve on their menu items and bring the prices down slightly. The owner did give us a free mochi ice cream and that was, sadly, the most enjoyable part...

I came in around 8:24 and was sat down by a short stumpy white young woman with a ponytail... I gave her grace and let her give me some menus! The wait time goes by 20 minutes and we had to ask someone else to serve us… Turns out she completely clocked out while we were waiting for at least a drink! Horrible service from her… Then a nice white gentleman comes to save our night. He made sure we were okay and fed very nicely.. He felt very bad for what has happened so a tip was reassured for him as well out of generosity. KUDOS to him for being such a good waiter..
