I recently visited a restaurant specializing in bao, and it was an overall enjoyable experience. The menu featured a variety of bao options, and I decided to try the spicy pork and beef and chicken bao with a side of their Asian street Brussels topped with peanuts.
The spicy pork and beef bao was a standout—juicy, flavorful, and perfectly spiced, with just the right amount of heat to keep it exciting. The filling was generous, and the bun was soft and fresh, providing an excellent balance. Make sure you eat this with a bib or napkin on your lap.
The crack chicken dip bao, however, fell a little flat in comparison. While the bun maintained its fluffy texture, the filling lacked the depth of flavor I was hoping for. It wasn’t bad, but it didn’t leave a lasting impression either.
The Brussels were outstanding and filled with flavor. They had a char on them which added to the flavor on top of the sauce served on them. Could’ve just had this as a meal and been satisfied. Definitely a must have to go with your baos of choice.
The ambiance of the restaurant was inviting, with a modern yet cozy feel that made it a comfortable spot to enjoy a meal. The service was friendly and efficient, adding to the positive experience.
Despite the slight inconsistency in flavor, I’d still recommend this place to bao enthusiasts. The spicy pork alone is worth a visit, and the overall quality makes it a good spot to explore different bao options. I’ll definitely return to try more...
Read moreYou know what? For a small-town Asian joint in a college town, this place isn't half bad. They aren't afraid to use a clever title for their restaurant name despite its association with digestive issues (disclaimer: it didn't bother my typically finicky intestines at all). Serving up tasty cuisine that's much more authentic than those sketchy Chinese takeout places, their bao and dumpling game is strong!
While it's impossible to find a menu online, and their website consists of an Instagram page, this is the way the younger generation gets their information. And it works. The pork belly bao is relatively comparable to what I've eaten in China, so props to the cooks at IB!
Notice I'm not calling this dish "Bao buns" like everyone else which is typical language in the states. That's actually redundant as Bao in Chinese already implies a filled bun, literally translated as parcel or package. And there is no need to call it a "filled bun bun." Autocorrect is already on my case about that double wording! But I digress. Yes, if you're in Auburn, grab a tasty Asian snack here and you won't be...
Read more5 stars The Irritable Bao is an absolute gem! From the moment you walk in, the energy is vibrant, the staff is welcoming, and the food—wow, the food is next level. Every bao is a flavor explosion—perfectly steamed, generously filled, and made with obvious care and creativity. The rotating menu keeps things exciting, and they’re never afraid to experiment with bold, global flavors. From the traditional Bao, themed Bao, or even Chinese street food you will not be disappointed.
What really sets Irritable Bao apart, though, is the heart behind the business. You can tell the owners are passionate about what they do and about giving back to the community. It’s more than a restaurant—it’s an experience, and one you’ll want to come back to again and again.
Highly recommend to anyone in Auburn who loves incredible food, great vibes, and supporting local businesses that...
