Cute restaurant, friendly staff. TERRIBLE FOOD! TERRIBLE neighborhood The starter of STALE chips and semi-frozen watery tomato and onion sauce [not salsa] with zero flavor was followed up with a $10 order of "nachos" which was more stale chips refried black bean with a smattering of melted white cheese and rings of a fresh cut jalepeno - totally gross rip off for .30 cents worth of food cost (maybe add a description if it's not gonna be a normal order of nachos?) My son's "coke" tastes weirdly like Bleach- maybe replace the filters on the soda machine? When the server asked "how is it?" and I replied "not good" and told her the honest truth (See above) she just stood there looking dumbfounded. Now, I've been a server for 25 years and that's NOT the appropriate response. There was no offer to remove the offending items and so I said just to bring the check, which she pulled out a machine and hovered over me expecting a gratuity for totally inept manners regarding customer service. Will not return. Save your money and go a few blocks down to a place with decent food. EDIT #1- my middle school aged son encouraged me repeatedly "be cool' but we saw retail gangso operating out of these spaces on east colfax. We witnessed what I believe to be retailtheftas these guys put thier trash o. The sllsyy

Great local, family owned Mexican restaurant on Colfax. They've got quite a bit of seating, and a full bar with a HUGE selection of Tequilas, as well as draft beers, and many margaritas! Their food is reasonably priced, about as much as a combo at a fast-food place nowadays, but for healthy, wholesome, delicious, and heartily-portioned food! I particularly enjoyed the smothered chicken burritos, mmm. It's also got a very warm, cozy atmosphere, with low, sultry lighting. Great vibe and atmosphere. The owners and staff are incredible and very friendly! I felt right at home. I'll be back again soon; thanks! =D

I go to La cueva every chance I get. They're like family there. The food is amazing. The hospitality is unreal. It's seriously like my aunt or my uncle's house that will cater to every need. Horchata is the best thing to have with a spicy meal. They have the spicy and they have the sweet. And I always get a to-go order as well not knowing when I'll be back I always take some home with chips and salsa. " I LOVE La Cueva"

A year ago someone who works nearby told me I should check this place out. One weekend a friend of mine, a fellow Mexican food enthusiast, and I drove over there to give it a try. However, as it turns out, we went on a Sunday and the restaurant is closed on Sundays. Something about being a christian family owned operation.

So, we went a block down the street and ate a La Morena's Mexican Restaurant.

It took a while for me to try La Cueva again, as it's not anywhere near where I live, where I work or along routes I normally drive. I brought the same friend and, dammit, it was Sunday!

Are you kidding me?

So, months later the same friend and I were trying to find Los Farolitos. When that turned out to be a bust, we decided to give La Cueva a try. Giving this was a Saturday, we were reasonably sure The Cave would be open.

However, we were not impressed. As soon as we walked in the door we were overwhelmed with the stench of a bathroom that exploded. Have you ever been privy to that odor? In a restaurant?

Not wanting to give up we chose a table as far from the restrooms we could find and ordered.

Both of us walked away thinking "Meh." The food was nothing special and definitely nothing to recommend someone should go out of their way for. Was it better than Casa Vallarta? Sure. Was it worth the $5 in gas to get there and back? Absolutely not.

My friend ordered a combination as a chance to try a number of dishes without having to commit and I ordered some fancy taco that wasn't impressive enough to remember the name of.

Meh.

I think, when I want good Mexican food I'll drive past La Cueva and head on over to La Morena's. Not only was their menu better, but their food and service was better. I've eaten there a handful of times now, even on my birthday, and haven't found anything...

A Disappointing Visit to a Once-Great Restaurant

My family has been loyal patrons of this restaurant for over four decades, and until our recent visit, it had consistently been a delightful place to dine. Unfortunately, our most recent experience left us disheartened.

The service was the most distressing aspect of our evening. Our server exhibited extreme unfriendliness and impatience, bordering on outright rudeness. Despite the restaurant being relatively empty, she hurried us from the moment we stepped in. To our surprise, in the middle of our meal, she abruptly demanded payment on the spot. We were never presented with a check—a customary courtesy that allows guests to review charges before settling.

Beyond the service, the culinary disappointment was palpable. The beans and rice tasted as though they had been prepared the day before—dry and astonishingly bland. However, amidst this culinary letdown, there was a silver lining: my margarita. It stood out as one of the best I’ve ever had.

In light of this experience, I sincerely hope that the restaurant’s owner takes serious measures to restore its former glory. As for me, it will be quite some time before I consider...
