March 8th at approximately 9:35ish I walk into Houndstooth as I’m waiting in line the barista wearing a red shirt and black leggings, made it very clear to the guest ahead of me, who’d ignore her first attempt at a greeting that she DEFINITELY was not greeting me; her words verbatim, “I’m definitely not talking to him!” At this time I still hadn’t be greeted, the young lady that definitely wasn’t greeting me hadn’t greeted me, she even walked away from the counter once my turn in line had come. The guy barista took my order and made my order by this time the young lady had come back to the counter, again no acknowledgement of the patron in front of her, asked the guy what I order (when previous patrons before me had the pleasure of letting her know their order), proceeds to ring me up (still not acknowledging the paying customer) and just turns the screen around. To which then I paid and told the young lady, “thank you for not greeting me, have a great day.” While I would hate to assume that she was being intentionally racist, that unfortunately is the only conclusion to be drawn as I was the only black gay man in the establishment. So if you’re queer or black I wouldn’t not recommend this establishment as a safe environment for our...
Read moreFirst, the coffee is wonderful. It tastes great, and is reasonably priced for the quality. Thus, three stars.
However, there's an upsell vibe with every transaction. For example, I ordered a "small black coffee" the other day. The gentleman behind the bar asked me which type of coffee I'd like. I said "whichever is your favorite." He served me the reserve coffee - which was almost twice as expensive. Without telling me that it was almost twice as expensive. I was told that the prices are on the menu, so I shouldn't have been surprised by the cost.
I've just never been to a coffee shop that up-charges quite this much. It feels skeezy. Generally, like at Greater Goods or Starbucks, the two different brewed coffees are the same price. You're basically just choosing between flavor profiles and roasts.
I actually love that Houndstooth offers a reserve coffee. It's fun - like at a cute bar that has a special whiskey. I just don't think it's fair to be RyanAired with price gotchas.
A little bit of transparency goes a long way. Considering that's 32% of Americans from all income brackets live paycheck to paycheck, it seems unfair that a cup of joe can jump from $3 to...
Read moreI really want to love houndstooth. The lamar location had been awesome and I fell in love with the French press. This location and visited several times and loved the environment. Plus it's close to my home. However, when I went today the table was sticky and dirty. When I asked the front clerk to clean it, she said it was staying and she couldn't clean it. I know the difference between a stain and a sticky dirty table. When my guests arrived to meet me how I feel I had invited, they were coffee and the coffee arrived lukewarm and tasting burnt. I didn't we ask for new coffee to be supplied, which it was, yet it still had that burnt feeling. On a good note, I had a double shot decaf macchiato with full fat milk and it was delicious. The Barista went above and beyond and made a cute heart shape in my drink. I also ordered jasmine tea which came out hot and delicious. Unfortunately because of the dirty table and the lukewarm coffee and giving this place to stories at this time. I sure do hope that the stains in the tables can be a dress, and that the sticky tables will be not sticky next time I visit. I'm willing to give...
