Thistle Cafe — Restaurant in Austin

Dry customer service from the cashier. Since it was a nice day, decided to sit in the courtyard. After a while, one drink was delivered but the other was missing. I thought maybe it wasn’t ready yet so I waited a few minutes but ended up having to go to the cashier for it. The barista tried explaining that the drink orders don’t go directly to them (Like what? We just had a drink brought out. Lol) She started making my drink and as I turned around to get more water, Dry Cashier said “wait here because she’s making your drink.” (Duh lol) So drink in hand now, I went back outside to my table and after a bit, the food items were brought. My sandwich was missing the veggie and I had to yet again go back to the cashier, with my plate. When handing it back to me they said they added a full portion of the veggie, which I’m not sure if that means that normally it’s only a little bit? At any rate, they were apologetic and I told them that it was our first time coming here (native Austin-nite though). It was steady but not busy, mid morning timeframe. Thistle Cafe has quickly become my go-to spot for meals during the week—I eat here multiple times and can’t recommend it enough for both quality and convenience. One thing that really stands out is their incredible consistency. I have a very specific order, and without fail, the staff always gets it right down to the smallest detail. It’s a rare thing to find a place that remembers not just your face, but your favorite meal and exactly how you like it prepared.

What makes Thistle Cafe even better is how efficient they are. Every time I call in or place an order online, my food is ready to go as soon as I walk through the door. It takes so much stress out of my day, and I genuinely appreciate how seamless the whole experience is—especially during a busy work week.

Beyond the exceptional service, the food is reliably fresh and delicious. The menu has plenty of healthy options as well as heartier choices, so there’s something for whatever mood I’m in. I’ve been coming here for a while and usually have a great experience. Recently though, with some staff and menu changes, the consistency hasn’t been the same. I really appreciate David’s hospitality, but I’ve noticed his coffees, smoothies, and tacos are often below average—tacos come out with smaller portions, smoothies aren’t always blended well, and the coffees and matchas taste a bit unfinished. On the other hand, Alex and Lauren always make excellent drinks, and the usual cook makes the tacos flavorful and filling. I know it takes time for new staff to get the hang of things, so I’m giving some grace here, but just a heads-up that I always ask for Alex or Lauren to...
