Read moreMy gf and I were both off work early on Friday so we decided to go out for a couple drinks at happy hour.
We liked the vibe at Upstairs at Caroline, and it’s dog friendly which is important to us since we take our dog Lolly everywhere. (I will say the weekends are filled with bachelorette parties, but where isn’t in downtown Austin).
Their happy hour for Friday was $3 tacos and $8 “Bad life choices” which is a house frozen (normally $12).
My gf and I both got two tacos and a bad life choice. The “frozen” bad life choice was a bad drink choice, it tasted like watered down watermelon juice with a little bit of vodka- awful drink with no flavor, I put quotes on frozen because it was partially frozen when we got it.
The tacos I got were the chicken and brisket, I definitely wouldn’t get tacos here again ever. The meats on both were very flavorless, not even worth $3.
After I ordered us each and espresso martini because I wanted a good drink after being disappointed by the bad life choice drink. The espresso martini was eh, nothing special and definitely not worth the $16 price tag. (I Iive in Austin and go out often so I know that is a standard price but usually everywhere they’re good). No foam or anything.
The service started out great but ended up being pretty bad. They took our order within a few minutes of sitting down and brought the food fast. As you can see in the pictures neither drinks came full (pics are before I even took a drink). I partially think the reason the drinks were so bad is because the service was bad. The frozen cocktail I ordered was mainly un-frozen by the time I got it, and the espresso martini had no foam- which means these drinks both probably sat at the service well waiting for the server to bring them to us. Or the bartender sucks, either way.
I’d say this is a cool day time vibe that’s dog friendly, but don’t come expecting good...
Read moreCool little place- not enough staff, the girls working upstairs were just running their legs off!
I had called a few days ago and talked to the events coordinator, I had a group of 11 people gathering for a birthday and because they don’t take reservations, I thought I’d check to see how I could get my group together up there. They wanted to charge me 750.00 dollars just to reserve a table??? What could possibly make them think that was even remotely a realistic price! That’s not including food, drinks, nothing but the table!😳
We’re talking about a place that serves 4.00 dollar tacos.
Because you can’t bring outside food in/deserts, I get that, it’s fine. I called to ask about ordering cupcakes ahead of time to make sure everyone got one. Cupcakes for the chocolate zucchini cake are 2.95 cents each. When I talked to the pastry chef she said she could make a cake. Great, perfect, let’s do that!
Tonight, when I went to pick the cake up from the restaurant downstairs, I wasn’t given a check/invoice, nothing until she ran the card and brought me the check to sign. It was $175.00 dollars!! I was in shock, then she told me they’d originally wanted to charge $400.00 dollars, I replied that I couldn’t fathom how a cupcake turned into cake order was priced out like that! I’m still shaking my head over it, what are these people thinking? I refused to pay that exorbitant amount.
They did finally concede to charging me for “cupcake rates” and the cake still cost 75.00.
Math skills are also questionable!
You’d think I was having a wedding reception or something with those prices!
This Austin business has lost...
