I had the sincere pleasure of dining at this cozy little restaurant on Sunday, the weekend before the July 4th holiday. My friend and I were dining in from out of town, and we'd just left a line dancing event, and we wanted authentic Maryland seafood, crab cakes to be exact and we found this spot. I will warn you that parking can be difficult in this area, especially during the height of the weekend at peak dining hours. However, we arrived shortly after 7 pm, found a decent space within walking distance of the restaurant, and we were so happy to have chosen this place to come dine. It reminded me of some of my favorite downtown restaurants in Boston. I love that it's literally a little nook in the cut! If the outer facade wasn't painted, "yellow" you would miss it.
First and foremost, when we walked in it felt like we were walking into a family member's home. Itās casual in appearance. The Chef/Owner, Nancy was super nice, and invited us in. She was entertaining a few friends that had just completed dinner and dessert, and they were just chatting as we arrived. She seated us, and gave us menus. Everyone was so nice! We ended up chatting with the other group and that was really nice. We even found out that the owner is friends with someone we line dance with. We ended up ordering the crab cakes and I added steak. The food was delicious. The steak was decent, but the crab cakes made up for the steak. The crab cakes was lumpy and perfect! I loved them! The owner also made us a couple of margaritas that we ordered, and it was so refreshing and good! I can tell this is a neighborhood favorite because, she's been in that location for 30 years. It's definitely a place I will be returning to because, the food was good and the conversation was even better! The owner shared with us, some of her really wonderful life stories. It was so awesome to meet her and talk with her because, she's very active in the community and with mentoring Baltimore's inner city youth through her cooking classes, and she's very passionate about building, improving and sustaining the cultural integrity and history of the City of Baltimore. I just love this is definitely the kind of place "where everybody knows your name...CHEERS!" Check them out the next time you're in downtown Baltimore! I promise you will not be sorry! As one of the previous reviews mentioned, if youāre looking for a spot with a āsleekā appearance and contemporary dining experience, then this is not the place. It feels like home, its a little dated (But who cares, I liked how it looked. Sheās been there 30 years and that means more to me.), but the crab cakes and conversation alone is enough to make you come and just...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy friends and I recently went to a cooking class here. Upon arrival, we sat down, and the chef discussed all the recipes - I felt this 20-30 minute discussion was unnecessary as she just read us the recipes. While you do receive 8-10 recipes, be warned that you do not cook all of those yourself. Each person in the cooking class worked on a recipe while the chef walked around and gave some tips. It was less of a class, and more of a baptism by fire method of learning. The recipes are not completely accurate as it leaves some items out on the ingredients list while you may need them toward the end of the recipe. If your top love language is words of affirmation, this may not be the class for you as you wonāt be receiving that here. Maybe try the kids class? The chef was very argumentative and defensive any time a question was asked or an ingredient was missing. Not all of the ingredients were in one location either, so it made it difficult to gather all the items for your recipe. Overall, it was very chaotic and disorganized with little instruction on how to do things. Before we could even clean our area, we were being yelled at about disorganization and not keeping it clean whilst the entirety of the class was disorganized. Some of the recipes required special methods of cooking, and rather than showing us/teaching us, they would just take the food to the back and do it themselves and bring it out. Had I wanted to just eat a random assortment of Indian food, this would have been great. The intention of taking the cooking class, however, was to actually learn something. Any attempt made to learn something resulted in being yelled at or being criticized about doing something wrong even though we werenāt really receiving instruction. The food was good at the end! (Note:* if youāre lactose intolerant, make sure to inquire about how many recipes have dairy as a LOT of...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI had no real expectations so I was just open to the experience.š¤ Upon arrival we noticed the restaurant was very cold inside granted, they open in the evenings for dinner, so may be they didn't have time to heat up the space, idk. Cold outside & cold inside, strike 1š. As we approach the table to be seated the odor hits me in the face. Strike 2. Mildew mop or dish cloth š¤¢š¤¢ Either the entire restaurant was mopped with a disgusting mop or the tables tops were cleaned with a disgusting dish cloth.𤮠The smell alone was killing my vibe. We hung out trying to ignore the smell. š· We ordered wine & appetizers. The wine & appetizers were great. I recommend the duck spring rolls, amazing flavor. Although we ignored the smell there was a group of fruit flys (gnats) that flew around our heads and faces like insects tend to do. I am not sure what the smell and bugs were about but it was highly discouraging.š¤š¤Ø For dinner I ordered the crab cake special for which this restaurant is known, they made it onto the Food Network. The crab cake special included 1 smoke & 1 traditional crab cake served with fries and brussel sprout slaw. The presentation was okay.š The actual food left plenty to be desired. The slaw wasn't even shredded just chunks of brussel sprouts covered in mayonnaise that was a NO for meā¹ The crab cakes were okay as well nothing special I've had better. The crab cake were droopy & wet on the inside. We laughed our way through dinner and enjoyed one another's presence as a group. However, this was an experience but not one I will repeat any time soon. First impressions are everything. The staff was pleasant but you cannot convince me that they didn't smell that...
