I really wanted to love Space 220, like so many people. Unfortunately for my middle-class family of 3, this place is not for us. If you're dead-set on experiencing this at least once, please do it for lunch.
The quality of food was not worth 55$ per person, let alone the 79$ price tag per person at dinner. Passholders, they only have a discount at lunch, not dinner (super helpful), and you would imagine that with a price that high, at least soda would be included. And you would be wrong. At least Ohana, an all you can eat for around 50$ per person lets you have free soda. Sure, it's not in space but if you sit on the far sides of the room, you won't be seeing too much anyway.
So let's dive in.
My group was there for dinner, we knew it was expensive going in but we were excited for the experience. Many Disney restaurants have a passholder or Disney Chase credit card discount, so we went in with a thought that we will possibly get a discount. We were not like the party ahead of us who balked at the price just as they were about to go onto the elevator, only to decide to leave.
The elevator is the most amazing experience; if I could pay for just a round trip, I totally would. So we were very, very excited. Going into the dining room, the view of 'space' was spectacular. We were stoked as we were guided straight to the 'windows to space.' Before being let down as we walked almost all the way down towards a far wall. Sure, we got to sit in a booth up front but we couldn't see Earth at all and the Centauri station never turned so that everyone in the room could get a great view of it. Only entering and leaving. Plus the little animations of asteroids, ships, satellites, and space-folk were pretty few and far between considering we had nothing else to look at. Nothing would ever be in an easy viewing spot, either. If I could see it, my party across from me could not and vice versa. Or we had to crane our necks to see anything.
The best seats, in our opinion, are going to be at the lounge and the center of the upper floor.
The food was.... decent. I would like to preface that my family is from southern Alabama and we don't have a "fancy" taste. We want great tasting food that's not sacrificed for looks. We had the calamari, scallop ravioli, and lobster bisque. The calamari wasn't bad but I've had better back home. The scallop ravioli was definitely the best of the three. The lobster bisque was ok, but we've had better on Disney property.
For our entrees we had filet and salmon. The salmon was alright but I personally prefer the salmon from the Edison in Disney Springs/The Village. The filet was THE BEST thing we had out of everything we tried. It was extremely good, unfortunately it doesn't make up for the price tag or the other lack-luster food.
Our desserts included the peanut butter tart, the carrot cake, and I got the kid's cupcake because I'm very picky. We had no complaints there.
In total, with three meals at 79$ and two sodas for the usual Disney cost of about 5$, plus tax and tip, ended up being basically 300$. For three people. I do not deny its a very cool experience. We only regret we couldn't get lunch reservations, but they're extremely hard to come by. My party member could only grab the dinner time the day before, just by happening to check. We may go back in a few years, at lunch time, but when there are so many other restaurants on property for much less cost and much more taste, it will be quite a while for us.
Obviously, it depends on each family/party. If you have someone desperate to go, then it will be a very neat experience. But for us, it just wasn't. We'd rather go to Connections Eatery across the way and get pizza, the Swiss burger, and a milkshake. For...
Read moreIf you are looking for a unique dining experience, that is the total package, look no further than space 220. After dining at several of Disney’s restaurants, I can say with confidence that space 220 is easily the best restaurant on Disney properties. Not only is the food amazing and the service impeccable, but the whole experience— the surroundings are so wild and well done and immersive. Everyone stays in character, and it is beautiful and fun and whimsical. What shines the most is the service and the care and compassion from the staff, but that is only slightly above the out of this world food, pun intended. My family, and I have eaten at some of the best restaurants in the world. We have dined at five star restaurants and eaten with top chefs, and our meal was easily in our top five meals of all time. We have severe food allergies and we weren’t sure if the restaurant could accommodate us. Not only did they accommodate us, but they went above and beyond and the food was absolutely outstanding in every way. I am still thinking about the food and how good it was. There are so many thoughtful details about the food and the menu, starting with the homemade strawberry watermelon lemonade made from scratch in house. Moving onto the appetizers, we enjoyed the beet salad with the ever so light caramelization (the Brûlée) on top of the goat cheese was literally edible texture perfection, and it added just such a subtle bit of sweetness to the perfectly crafted dish. We also enjoyed the shrimp tacos. The house made wonton taco shells were light and crispy and not at all greasy. The shrimp was perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection and the veggie selection on top the tacos was perfectly crunchy and slightly spicy. It complemented the dish perfectly. Moving onto the miso glazed salmon. This dish was a vision. The salmon was perfectly cooked and the marinade was outstanding with a hint of sweetness and a touch of bite. The sauce was a creamy, cooling, refreshing curry dream, and the leek salad was the perfect complement to the meal. The dish is pure perfection. We tried several desserts to include the vegan carrot cake, again with the touches that took the food over the top, slightly salted to order, it was a flavor explosion. We also tried the vegan cupcake and mango sorbet. Everything was five star first class all around. I know I mentioned the staff before but I absolutely have to mention them again and call out the people who went above and beyond for us. Our server Taylor was gracious, kind, accommodating, and so attentive. Miranda helped us with our allergy concerns, but even above the allergy concerns, she was such a compassionate human being. She could see my son was in distress and having issues, and she took the time to help quell his fears and make the experience more enjoyable. She also took the time to talk to me and give me tips for helping him through the park. She was instrumental in helping turn our day around and making it a positive experience for my son. Chef, Joey prepared our food and he is truly a gift in the kitchen. I can’t stop thinking about the meal. In addition to that, the general manager Daniela also stopped by our table and helped us and helped us fix an issue we were having with one of the rides and it ended up being my son’s favorite ride of the whole trip and he still talking about it to this day. If you were on the fence about going to this restaurant, don’t be! It is Disney at its best. It is fine dining at its best. It is an experience at his best and the people are...
Read moreThis is a very popular restaurant and given the current, post COVID-19 policies on when you can make dining reservations, a bit difficult to attain said reservation. Nevertheless, we were able to make a reservation for lunch.
You start your dining experience by being given a boarding pass to the space elevator that will take you up to Centauri Space Station. Once you enter, and the elevator ride starts, you can look either down to the floor or up to the ceiling. Have your cell phone ready to take video as this is a very cool touch, if not the best touch, to your dining experience! When you look down, it shows you leaving Epcot and when you look up, it shows you heading up to space to the space station. When you finally get to your destination the ambience hits you as you look towards the windows! The image of distant Earth, as if viewing it from outer space, the occasional astronaut floating by and some space ships here and there. Everthing I just described above is why Space 220 is so popular, but now on to the food.
For starters we ordered Neptune Tartare and Big Bang Burrata. I enjoyed the tartare although there wasn't enough sesame crackers for me to have with every bite of tartare. The burrata was also good. Now it goes downhill a bit. For our main course we had Terra-Bolognese and Steak & Frites. The bolognese, for whatever reason, did not play well with my palate. It left a weird unexplainable taste in my mouth. I was only able to take 3 bites and left the rest. The steak was over done, as you can see on my pic. The rest of the flavor on the plate was ok though. Someone at our table ordered Galactic Salmon and the enjoyed it very much, so I'll have to take their word on it. We chose not to order desserts because it was not included in the prix fixe menu, but mostly because of how our dining experience had gone so far.
Look, I get the reason why this restaurant is that popular, especially with younger kids. One word, ambience! Aside from that, though, at least for me, there has to be justification for the high price menu. At $55 pp for lunch and $79 pp for dinner, it has to be backed up by the quality of food for me to want return again. This is the reason reservations for the lounge are harder to get, because at least there you can order a la carte or just have drinks if you want to. Thus being able to take in the ambience at a price of your choosing. The lounge will not work for bigger groups though. Listen, I know the dining experience at WDW, overall, can get expensive and that's fine, but I feel the money I spend on other signature dining restaurants at WDW are worth it compared to Space 220. It's definitely a one and done for me for now unless the quality of food lives up to the pricing or I'm with family or friends that have kids that...
