This company took over the Common Grounds coffee shop last year and my aunt and I went for lunch. She ordered a grilled cheese sandwich that was supposed to come with a side of chips. After a bit of a wait, she was served a lukewarm, unadorned cheese sandwich that looked like it had been flattened by a steamroller (think the kind of sandwich grandma served you in 1975). I went in and asked after the chips, which I assumed would come in an individual bag. I was told the order didn't come with chips. I pointed to the board where it clearly said the sandwich came with chips. Instead of being handed a small bag of chips, I was told that someone would bring the chips to the table. After another wait someone did indeed arrive bearing a saucer sprinkled with a handful of chips.
Not wanting to write a review based on one unimpressive experience, I recently went again for breakfast. The minute I walked in the door I was overwhelmed by the smell of stale dishrags that've been used too long without washing. (Nevertheless, she persisted.) They didn't have the tomato pie (which is the only thing I really recommend) so I ordered a spinach pastry and a cinnamon roll, both warmed. I took a seat and watched for my heated pastries to come up. Finally, thinking I must've missed my name, I went to inquire after them. The spinach pastry would be out shortly, but they hadn't started heating the cinnamon roll. I choked down a tough, doughy spinach pastry while waiting on the cinnamon roll. It finally arrived, but was still so cold I could cut the dollop of icing on top very cleanly with a knife. I asked that it be reheated. It arrived slightly warmer, but heat had not improved the dry pastry and lukewarm icing.
This is a great shame since I really wanted to love this coffee shop with its prime location on the waterfront. The pastries in their cases look great, but this wasn't the first time I've found them to be hard, tough, stale or dry. The service is slow and disorganized and the staff always seem harried and abrupt. And as I said, during my most recent visit the store reeked of dirty dishrags. Until they up their food sourcing and/or baking games, and streamline their service, I have to recommend City Java (excellent muffins) or Herban Marketplace (best croissants west of Paris) as better alternatives...
Read moreUsed to be a way cozier coffee shop with a better variety of lattes, with much more flavor... I also remember way more courteous service provided before it changed management.
They were out of 2 out of their 4 specialty lattes...which I was sad about (they didn't have any of my first choices). So this trip, I ordered their Queen Bee, which is a latte with espresso shaken with honey, hazelnut syrup, plus asked for oat milk. The flavor was way too mellow; barely any honey or syrup was used. Oat milk was silky smooth a s not too thin. So 3 out of 5 stars for the specialty latte?
I also ordered their gluten-free cheddar and bacon scone. Very little flavor as well; dough used was way chewier than what I'm used to eating elsewhere. It was ok, but was definitely expecting a bolder flavor - couldn't even taste the cheddar, really :(
My sister-in-law ordered a vanilla iced latte and she commented they didn't add flavor at all - it was just espresso and milk. So that's a 2 stars or less.
Service was sad... staff didn't seem happy to be there at all. I greeted cheerfully, was extremely polite, and still got long faces throughout - even after tipping. Oh well...
Sigh how upsetting...this was such a great spot! But I believe that, with better training and not being so skimpy in the use of their ingredients that customers pay quite a bit for, this shop could go back to its...
Read moreWe absolutely love lowcountry cider coffee and baked goods and love stopping at their location on the Ace Basin Hwy. The experience we had this a.m. at the riverfront location in Beaufort left us baffled. The manager on duty was not only rude to customers, we witnessed her being rude to her staff who was asking if they could clock in 15 min early to help with the busy crowd. It is true that attitude trickles down from the top as it was evident that the staff this sunny, Sunday morning is miserable. Truly a shame as this prime location has every ingredient to be extremely successfull OTHER THAN THE SERVICE. We found ourselves apologizing to the visitors from Austria who where looking for the traditional southern hospitality that sadly, this establishment did not provide. We assured them that their experience (and ours) should not be used as a benchmark for the city if Beaufort's usual charm and hospitality. Do better, LCC. ALL IT TAKES is a smile...
