Please allow me to explain the three stars.
If I were rating any other business, then it would’ve been much higher. The staff and clerk were INCREDIBLY helpful, as it was my first time visiting. The restaurant was clean, and the prices were right. The atmosphere was splendid! The wonderful smoky smell when you walked in was heavenly for this Kansas City born and bred, raised on BBQ, world-traveling, with hundreds of “small town BBQ” joints across the U.S. having taken his money.
Here’s the problem. I’m reviewing a restaurant, and the food ain’t that great. The smoky smell must be an illusion (pardon the electronic sarcasm), because there wasn’t a hint of smoke in my meat (pulled pork and brisket). Maybe a very slight hint in the beef, but not much. Also, the pork tasted like it had been frozen somewhere in transit from the pen to the restaurant. It was a bit mushy, and it wasn’t true pulled pork. There were three pieces of “quarter-sized” bones and a couple pieces of cartilage mixed in. I had fewer issues with the brisket. It was cooked well, however it was very dry. The Mac and Cheese was........ meh. Stringy and creamy, but with little flavor. Throw in some garlic salt or something to make it pop. Maybe because I got there a little after 2:00 PM. Was it leftover from the lunch rush? For reference I ordered a pound each of brisket and pork for me and my colleagues.
Now here’s where I have mixed emotions. I know Memphis, NC, KC, and Deep South BBQ sauces. Heck, I’ve even tried a mom/pop place on the Chesapeake Bay where they put Old Bay in their sauce. To each their own. But I never met the Ohio Buckeye sauce. This stuff was amazing! It came on sweet with a kick. Not a spicy kick, but a shock to the back of the lower jaw, HOOOAH! Tangy kinda kick. This stuff was amazing again! I wanted to mix that gorgeous concoction into my toothpaste, if they’da let me. Seriously, This stuff was amazing (third time).
They do offer a military, LE discount, which I am proud to say that I would go back and re-visit these fine folks based on that merit alone.
Bottom line? This restaurant is TOP NOTCH minus a few. Just fix y’all’s meats, and I’ll bring a hundred folks with me next time. If your a BBQ restaurant, you have the “restaurant” down pat. Just work on the BBQ, please. ...
Read moreSo, this was my first trip here, and I must say, we will be back! My wife guided me through the tour de deliciousness! And it was one for the books! The restaurant is nicely decorated and the smoked pork and burning mesquite aroma soaks through your nostrils and hits the tastebuds! You feel like your eating as soon as you set foot in the door! We walked to the ordering counter, set like a cafeteria style similar to Chipotle and subway, but be prepared, this will truly be a decadent experience for your senses! I casually places my order of Mac and cheese in a bowl, to be piled on by pork, slaw and corn with a side of baked beans! The slaw is exquisite, lightly dressed and very crunchy, so fresh! The corn was sweet and delicious! My goodness, the baked beans were full of thick pork and lightly spicy, absolutely perfect! The pork...oh the pork!!! So good, tenderly smoked and so juicy, can be eaten plain but I drizzled it with Carolina gold sauce and some buckeye sweet sauce and this was no mistake either!!! The service was impeccable with the staff being so friendly and courteous and taking the time to tell us how to get their specials! Yes! I bought two shirts!! Something this good deserves to be worn!! Next time I will wear my shirt and use it as a napkin!!! Don't let this place pass you by!!! Your tastebuds will...
Read moreI was in the area looking to try something new and saw the website pop up as a suggestion. Why not? It's wedged in between two other restaurants at the Fairfield Commons and has the "NOW OPEN" banner on the front. I decided on the brisket sandwich before I arrived so that made my search over the short menu even quicker. The server who greeted me asked me what type of protein I wanted. I was taken aback until I realized that the food service is based on the line style, ala Chipotle. They have a little bun toaster right at the beginning then he added the meat to the bun while it rested on a scale. I was a little worried, but they serve up a healthy portion of brisket on the bun. The pieces were mostly flesh and very little fat, so you're not getting the meat cheat. I opted for a side of Mac n cheese and a local brew from the Yellow Springs brewery. The total cost $15.50. A little costly but it was definitely filling. The brisket was a tad dry but not inedible and the sauces were tasty. I would prefer a bit more heat in the "spicy" sauce, but it was still good. I was also impressed by the real cheeses in the mac n cheese! Great tasting. If you're looking for bbq and you want it served up quick, check...
