Soooo, today we went to Mode X at the Greene for lunch. Its located across from the movie theatre and next to BD Mongolian. Surprisingly, it was very empty for a Friday at noon. Mode X calls themselves a tequila bistro and yes, there was a lot of tequila on display, unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to sample any of it. Anywho, the ambience was nice with a lot of black décor. It was noted that the cutlery was hefty and the cast iron-like dinnerware was a nice touch.
We started with a few appetizers. First, there was the queso fuego. It was their cheese dip that they light on fire. A server brought the dip and poured what I am assuming is tequila on top of the cheese and lit it on fire. We had to wait for the fire to die out and once it did, the cheese was good; nice and creamy. It was served with house made tortilla chips. The chips were puffy and crispy. Everyone thought the chips were good, though at first bite for me, it seemed as though there was a burnt taste that lingered. Second was the jalapenos, which were bacon wrapped and stuffed with cheese. I am usually not a bacon wrapped jalapeno person b/c the bacon tends to be rubbery. However, I have to say the bacon was crisp and the overall dish, not too spicy. It was a satisfactory appetizer, though the temperature could have been hotter. Third, was the tamales-sweet corn tamales, served with pico de gallo and crema. Unfortunately, I was not a fan. I expected the temperature of the dish to be hot or at least warm and it was not. That was the census at the table. The pico and crema added nothing to the dish. Lastly, for appetizers was the salsa. I don’t think it should be considered salsa. It tasted like tomato sauce. At first bite, there was no spice, but as you dug a little bit into the bowl, there was a little hint of spice. After a first sampling, no one went back for seconds. On to the main dishes….
First off, I have to say, Mode X does get points for plating. The look of the food on the black dinnerware was impressive. Companion 1 had the enchiladas with a side of rice. It was flavorful, though it could have used a little spice and perhaps less sauce. Companions 2 and 3 had the Pollo con Arroz-grilled chicken, queso, pineapple, and Mexican rice. The flavor was good and filling, although a little heavy after following the queso. Too much cheese going on. Companion 4 had the tequila vegetal-mixed vegetables, sun-dried tomatoes, artichokes, in a tequila cream sauce. The dish was okay, though companion 4 felt it was different from when it was last eaten. Companion 4 also had a side of the cilantro garlic potatoes. They were good, though companion 4 was expecting perhaps some steamed potatoes and not what looked like diced French fries in a bowl. Companion 5 had the torta birria sandwich and fries-beef, cheese, guacamole, and pickled onions. Companion 5 did say the sandwich was good and appreciated that the bread was soft. The French fries were good, but nothing memorable about them. Companion 6 had the chicken tacos w/ Mexican rice. The tacos were good and tasted fresh. However, the highlight for companion 6 was the Mexican rice. Finally, I had the camarones al ajillo-shrimp sauteed in chile guajillo, cilantro, garlic, mezcal, with a side of rice. Camarones is usually my go to at El Meson, so I was hoping for a similar if not better experience. This was just okay. I felt there was perhaps too much sauce on the shrimp. Not enough rice in proportion to the shrimp and there was way too much guacamole, hidden under the greenery on my plate.
Bottom line, I have noticed that sometimes the dinner experience can be much better than the lunch experience. If I were to go back, it would be for dinner but mainly check out their...
Read moreIf I could rate this place 10/5 stars, I would! My partner and I decided to try Mode X for the first time last week since he had just spent his last day working at another store at the Greene. We started the night at the bar. Immediately we walked in and were amazed at how beautiful and almost luxurious the decor was, yet the atmosphere felt so calm, relaxed, professional, and friendly! Everyone was smiling, from the staff to the guests, and it was extremely welcoming. We started at the bar and met Beth, who was absolutely fantastic; I actually hate tequila with a passion, but she helped guide us as we tasted different types until I found one that I actually loved! She really took the time to make the experience feel personal, as if she’s a friend we’d known for years. As more friends of ours showed up, we chose a table and was given Madison as our waitress. Not only was she extremely outgoing, friendly, and attentive, she also listened to each one of our party’s interests, likes/dislikes, and offered suggestions on both food and cocktails we’d all enjoy. She absolutely crushed it; all of our friends LOVED their drinks and food. My partner and I got the quesadilla and the queso dip with chips, and we were absolutely blown away at how beautiful and incredibly delicious it was - we both agreed it was the best we’d had anywhere else! A friend ordered the pasta tequila, another ordered a burger, another loved the smell of our queso so they got the dip as well, and another got tacos, and everyone was overwhelmed by how delicious their meals were. We planned on only being there for a couple of hours, but we had so much fun with the staff that we actually stayed nearly 5 hours. I cannot recommend Mode X enough. It’s such a unique and incredible addition to the area; it definitely stands out among the breweries and bars, and it’s unlike any other experience we’ve ever had and we absolutely plan on frequenting this establishment...
Read moreMy family comes to this place very often. The food and drinks are always good and the service is typically top tier. However, we made a reservation to celebrate Cinco De Mayo and it was the complete opposite of the normal experience.
We were sat immediately upon entering the restaurant, but everything went downhill from there. We sat at our table for 16 minutes, and no one came over to greet us, give waters, nothing.
I asked the manager about it, and he was very apologetic. He immediately sent over our server who still waited 10 more minutes before coming to the table. He took our order, offered us a free shot, and that was the last time he served us. My husband even tried to flag him down to ask about ordering other items but it really seemed as if the young man was doing every he could to avoid eye contact with us. It was pretty upsetting.
In the end, my family decided to leave, we knew the experience was only going to get worse and wasn’t what we’d typically see at this restaurant. Because I still couldn’t get ahold of our waiter, I went to the bar and asked the bartender to cancel our order and pay for the margaritas we did receive, which were not good, btw.
I noticed that the manager asked the bartender what was going on with our table and I heard him attempt to explain what had happened. The manager did walk over and say something to our server but no one approached me to apologize for the experience nor attempt to make things right. Certainly not what I was expecting from Lode X but maybe this establishment can’t handle...
