WORST experience ever in every single way. If I were you, I'd read the whole review and I wouldn't even give this place a shot.
Went to the store, asked for a 6 inch strawberry cake and wanted the freshest one made. Store staff told me the one at the front was fresh too and was reluctant to get me a new one from the back. She finally went to grab the cake after I asked again nicely, saying that I've called to check that they had more at the back that's not on display (& fresh). When she came out, I asked her when the cake was made and she said SHE HAS NO IDEA. I asked her then how would she know that's the freshest and she said she doesn't know but that all their cakes are fresh..... but how fresh? who knows! I prompted by asking if there's a sticker or some type of tag on the paper plate since that's how ALL other places identify production date so they know when to discard expired/not fresh cakes. She still had no idea. Then this other lady came and was rude and just said "our boss brought it in today so it is fresh. Do you want it or not?" Wow! the attitude from this kid.
I then asked if they could write happy birthday on the cake directly and they said yes but the only color choice was RED. Chinese people NEVER write names with the color red as it is terrible luck... especially for a birthday!! I asked if there were other colors to choose from. Apparently red and white are the only free colors. IF YOU WANT WRITING IN ANY OTHER COLOR, BE PREPARED TO PAY A FEW EXTRA BUCKS (it was $3-5). I couldn't believe that I had to pay EXTRA just to change the color of the frosting to write a simple happy birthday message! Then I asked about the option of writing it on a piece of chocolate or something and they told me I would have to pay extra for the chocolate as well to write the birthday message. The girl was far from nice and rolled her eyes at me and exchanged looks with her colleagues numerous times in front of me. RUDE.
And... that wasn't the end of it. A 6 inch strawberry cake cost $43 tax in - super expensive and far from worth the price. The cake came with 4 whole strawberries at the top and EXTRA small sliced strawberries on the inside which amounted to maybe another THREE strawberries for the whole cake. You are basically eating sponge cake and cream w/ a TINY touch of strawberry.
Worst off, the cake went bad in LESS THAN 2 DAYS!! of being in the fridge. I know there are fresh fruits but honestly, no fruit cake goes bad THAT quickly. This comes to prove that they did not give me a freshly made cake and since they don't even know when the production date was, it was just pure bad luck I guess?
If you want diarrhea or an upset stomach while paying a premium for a simple strawberry cake w/ barely any strawberry, I would recommend this place......
Read moreTLDR: better than 85C Bakery! I don't think you can go wrong with any sweet pastry here.
Let me start off by saying that this place is better than 85C Bakery. Yup, you heard right. I find that 85C's pastries are lighter and more airy. The pastries here are actual pastries--fluffy and filling. Not to mention the fillings inside the pastries are excellent ratios. None of this 20% filling to 80% carb that you sometimes get at 85C. If you get a custard bun here, you get custard and a bun, not bun and a custard. More bang for your buck!
Tip: if you are taking these home before eating, I highly recommend warming them up in the oven or toaster oven for a few mins (especially if there are sesame seeds on tip) because the aroma is awesome and the flavor is really brought out when they are warmed.
Atmosphere: small quiet bakery with two tall book shelves of pastries and a cake case.
Parking: small slanted lot.
Menu: there is a beverage menu posted on the back wall behind the register if you fancy something to drink.
Service: walk in, grab a tray and the pastries you want, pay at the register. Cakes and drinks can be ordered at the register.
Red Bean Mochi: wow, what an excellent redbean to mochi ratio! It's just the right amount of sweetness and the texture is perfect---not too chewy and not too soft. It cannot get more perfect than this!
Coconut Cream Bun: it was one of those days where I just had to indulge. There was quite the generous amount of coconut cream inside the bun and I was pleasantly pleased with each bite.
Pineapple Coconut Bun: ooooh there were yummy bits of coconut in the filling of this bun. Yummm. Not so much pineapple taste as much as the coconut but still delicious!
Custard Bun: Generous on that custard! Not too runny and not too gelatinous--very satisfying and lightly sweetened.
Lotus Seed Paste Pastries: my all time favorite filling in any pastry. It's not too sweet but can be overwhelming due to the dense consistency--best paired with hot tea! Definitely a try at least one to see if you like it kind of filling. I can't really describe the flavor--maybe slightly nutty? Give it a...
