I am so grateful to the staff here at Mallard Ice Cream!🍦 Not only do they make the most DELICIOUS and unique flavors, always featuring something new, (& often only available for a short time, so visit often so you don't miss anything good!), that you're sure not to have the opportunity to try elsewhere, but they also have a chill, clean and comfortable atmosphere with pleasing colors & comfortable furniture to relax on either by yourself or with friends. They are not overpriced, like so many places nowadays. On top of all these great characteristics this place has to offer, I had a personal experience that sealed the deal as far as my appreciation for Mallard Ice Cream: while walking alone late at night in Downtown Bellingham around 3 years ago I realized that I was being followed by a strange man. He was quite obvious about it, like he didn't care one bit if I was aware of his intentions. Lucky for me, Mallard Ice Cream was still about 10 minutes away from closing up shop so I hurried inside and got in line to order some delicious ice cream. I expected the man to just keep walking once he realized I would be in a safe, well-lit space with lots of other people around- I was wrong. He followed me inside & right before I ordered he came up to me and physically PRESSED his entire greasy, smelly body up against mine, hardly short of grinding on me! The girl behind the counter was a lovely young lady, even smaller than myself, with cute braided pigtails to top it off. When I say "don't judge a book by its cover"- oh boy!! Immediately upon noticing the look of fear and disgust on my face when he did this, the employee straight up ROARED at this man! I was so impressed at how intimidating she managed to sound but it was something along the lines of "NNOOOO!!! YOU DON'T TOUCH HER!!!! GET OUT OF HERE RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!" 😡👺👹☠️!! The man looked genuinely scared and HE ACTUALLY LEFT!!! After I ordered my ice cream she told me that they were closing up but that I was welcome to stay inside and eat my treat as they closed up to make sure he wasn't waiting for me outside. He was not. 😉😄😏🥳 This badass of a lady made me feel so safe and cared for and I am greatly appreciative to her as well as...
Read moreMallard is definitely worth a visit if you happen to be in the area. They only take cash but there is an ATM inside. The prices at Mallard are excellent. I'm used to paying more for great ice cream, but you don't have to here, and the sizes are good too. Parking is metered (free on Sunday), but there are bike racks outside.
Mallard always has a variety of interesting, unusual flavors. During my last visit, I had some of the more normal flavors, but was thoroughly impressed. Their espresso ice cream had a nice, strong flavor is one of the best that I've had. (I asked and was told that it's because they brew the espresso right into the cream.) I also had scoops of cinnamon Oreo and mint Oreo. Both were balanced so well, with the flavors being quite distinct, but never overwhelming, and the cookie chunks were large and numerous. My wife and I also noted that the texture of Mallard's ice cream is particularly good - smooth and creamy in a way that other shops have trouble matching.
They did not offer homemade waffle cones, something I look for at every shop, but the cones were really fresh and still worth getting.
There is a ton of seating, including couches by a fireplace and a kids table, and board games if you feel like staying for a while. There are two huge bathrooms which are great for families but they don't have baby changing tables (or at least one of them doesn't). They did have stools and short sinks for...
Read moreMy husband and I were so excited to visit Mallards again during our visit to Bellingham. We frequented this place during college and several times post college. Their ice cream and atmosphere used to always be a joy. Currently (August 2022) they continue to have a strict “no mask no service” sign as you walk in, despite the CDC regulations of a non-mask requirement during this time. Since we wanted to still give them business and buy ice cream, we both willingly took one of their disposable masks available at the entrance and continued on to order at the counter. Unfortunately my husband’s mask (being disposable) did not fit snug over his nose and slipped down as we went to order. The woman working at the register told my husband to “put his mask over his nose” in an aggressive way that completely made us feel unwelcomed. It distracted us from ordering ice cream and we ended up leaving. Again, not due to their mask mandate, but because of the judgmental and unpleasant tone of the server. I’m sorry to say we won’t be giving them our business again until a more welcoming and non protesting vibe comes from a community establishment that we’d...
